Does anybody put plants in the cage?

Post by livinonaprayer » Wed Apr 02, 2008 2:55 pm

I read that they like plants inside the cage. I'm guessing silk is the safest but I don't know how much or what size. Does anyone use live plants and if so what kind? I have two zebras in a 26"w x 22" ht x 14" cage.
Any ideas?

I just put a small gardenia bush in the cage and a fern and they really love both plants being in the cage. they been jumping in and out of the fern plant for the past 2 days. If you look under the breeding section birdgranna had posted up a list of diffrent plants you could use with the finches.
Society Finches, Fire Finches, Strawberry Finches, Owl Finches, Plum Head Finch, Goldbreast Waxbill Finches, Orange Cheek Waxbill Finches, Blue Capped Cordon Finches, Zebra Finches, Bronzewing Mannikin Finches, Red-Cheek Cordon Blue Finches, and Button Quail

I'll bet it looks really nice. I'll check out the other section for that list. Thanks a lot!

I tried a couple of pretty safe houseplants, but found "the kids" just tore them to shreds!

for me, i think putting them plants in the cage was a bad idea because, as soon as i put them in one pair of zebras that was sitting on 3 eggs decided to move to the plant and i watched for 2 days and they didnt return to there nest, so i had to put there eggs in 3 diffrent nest with eggs already in them.

Yikes!
I think I'll forget about the plant idea for a while. They're zebras and will probably just tear them up anyway.
They already have eggs in a nest.
When/if they hatch, I was going to remove the nest for a while.
I guess I shouldn't put anything nestable in there. Apparently anything is a nest for these guys.

well i kinda have good news. i had put the eggs in diffrent nest and the other zebras have been taking care of them. but the parents laid another clutch of eggs and are now sitting on them in a nest and one pair has actually built a huge nest in the plants and already has 4 eggs. so luckily everything went ok and none of the eggs were lost. and my first clutch just hatced like 2 days ago.

I reckonthat you could put a pait of zebras in a shoebox and some how they would manage to build a nest & breed successfully
