New guys set up...

I joined the forum earlier today...My space is much smaller than some on here but I thought I'd show you what can be done in a small garden.
No room for an aviary as such so I designed a birdroom that can be sealed in winter but opens up for the summer months.....

I've got a flight and cages in the summerhouse too...Gouldians in the cages and a colony of Hecks in the flight.

And a house full of Conures and lovebirds...

Oh!....and two dogs...the vacuum cleaner is never silent.

It is both beautiful and functional....can you come across the pond to my house and make me one too!

Paul....MN is short for Minnesota. All the US states have 2 letter abbreviations that are commonly used and I don't even know all of them...lol!

I forgot to ask in the first post...what are those beautiful purple flowers in the hanging baskets?

Hiya...The flowers are Aubrieta 'Purple Cascade' pronounced 'Orbreesha'
They are past their best in that picture taken last year.I use hanging baskets a lot as I don't have the ground space and prefer to plant just one type of plant in each basket rather than a jumble of different types.As you can see in this pic I'm VERY short on space.The blind is out over the summerhouse in this pic....essential in hot weather to shade the birds inside......Paul.

Wow Paul, very impressive setup. It's amazing what you can do with limited space if you put your mind to it.

The bird room that closes, does it close with glass? If so, what do you do for ventilation? Can you see into the birdroom from the kitchen?

How many birds do you keep?

Sorry for all the questions but I really like what you have done and would love some more info.

Hiya ...Yes the birdroom is sealed in winter with glass doors...limited ventilation from two grilles.I maintain temperature of around 11c even in the worse English winters with electric panel heaters.
The summerhouse/conservatory is linked to the house central heating system.
I keep around 50 Gouldians at present having recently sold 14 pairs...10 pairs have recently been paired for breeding (no eggs yet) The conservatory flight has 5 pairs of Hecks Grassfinch kept as a colony,they have built 3 nests showing no interest in the boxes provided.I'm sure they're sitting eggs but I'm unwilling to risk disturbing them to find out.
The birdroom has all the juvenile Gouldians and an odd pair of Chestnut Breasted Mannikins which are sitting eggs.Plus a few Zebras.
When it comes to space ...you wanna see my spare bedroom.....

Hiya...I only breed birds for pleasure,and try and give them the best life possible.I know others show birds, and I have nothing against that.But personally, the thought of catching birds up...transporting them round the country...and having hundreds of people peering at them in strange surroundings....No thanks,not for me.

yes i agree with the poor birds, and the things they get put through for show. and i am totally against culling unless its a life threatening condition for the bird and not just because it's not good enough for show standards. i believe everyone deserves a life but no one deserves a half life

no, i also breed for the joy of it

, and not for shows. i just saw the extensive breeding cages and was wondering what you did with them, you must be overrun with them.

Hiya...I have 16 breeding cages.Not a lot by some standards.I could divide into 32 if necessary but I prefer the birds to have space.
Overun??? I should be so lucky,if only Gouldian breeding was that easy.
