Poison??? Grape Vine Perch

Post by Sitting Duck » Wed Aug 28, 2013 12:14 pm

Hi All
This is my first post. I am in the process of biulding an aviary. I will post that info seperately.

Anyway, I found some beautiful grape vines from a local vinyard which I would like to add as a perch. They are old and dry. I know they have probably been sprayed with pesticides in the past. I have wire brushed them and rinsed them well. They have been sitting in the sun for a long time. Is there anyway there is still some residual pesticides that would affect the finches, (once I get some :D ).???

Might depend on which type of pesticide. I probably would get others that weren't sprayed just to be safe.

Why not check with the vineyard to see if and/or what they might have sprayed on the vines? Many places today follow organic practices. Personally, a friend collected a huge number of grapevines from a local vineyard, and I have used them without problem. Washing them well should make them OK to use.

I totally agree with Sally, best to check with the vineyard. Not only do they spray for pests but they also spray for fugal diseases throughout the year.
Best to check :)

I love grapevine perches, and luckily can harvest my own in my yard. I agree with the ohers - check with he vineyard. You could also soak them in a bleach/water solution, and then sun dry, or even bake.

Thanks all. Great advise. My aviary is 80% complete. There is a birdmart in Paso Roble CA on Sept 29th. I hope to learn a lot there and purchase my first birds.
