Coating on metal parts?

Post by Nerien » Mon Oct 07, 2013 1:46 pm

I have gotten some interesting safe wood branches to put in my various cages, and need to get screw eyes to rig them up (they are going to be big hanging swings, mostly for the hookbills, who do chew on everything). Because I can't get out to a store, I am looking to order them on amazon or ebay or wherever. I searched for stainless steel, but find most of the listings are saying, "Chrome plated steel", or "Nickel plated steel" or "zinc plated steel" or "brass plated steel" (I know brass and zinc are no good), and have also found ones that say silver and gold plated, but I don't know if those mean real silver or gold, or if they just mean the colors.

Are any of these okay? How do I pick one? My screwy eyes are not doing well searching through so many listings. Help? I want something with a smallish eye, but a longer screw, as one of the wood pieces is a big, chunky grapevine or mopani wood I bought, and kind of heavy. Are any of these coatings/platings safe?

I did a quick search through google and found these

http://www.amazon.com/25-Pack-Stainless ... B003NAYQH2

http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-S ... B000KXY8K0

http://www.boltdepot.com/Screw_eyes_Sta ... steel.aspx

last link is not amazon

Another alternative would be to try a chandlery if you have one localy
