I have four Zebra's and I just bought two Orange-Cheeked Waxbills. I think I'd like to house them separately and I understand that waxbills need a bit more flying room. My question is this. I have a cage (in essentially new condition) that was designed for a chameleon. It has a plastic frame with a tight, breathable wire mesh on all side - would this cage be safe/wise to convert to a flight cage?

if it is a fine mesh I would be concerned with nails getting caught in the mesh, the bird struggling to get free and injuring itself or worse.

I guess I had not thought of that . . . it is a shame because it is the perfect size for a flight cage

If the mesh is as fine as screen, the OC Waxbills could definitely get their nails caught. If it is more like 1/4" by 1/4" mesh, it could be OK. For the smallest waxbills, 1/2 x 1/2 or 1/2 x 1 is as big as you want to go. Anything bigger, and they could slip through and escape.
