Huge Aviary found on Craigslist and had to share...

Post by Colt » Sun Nov 17, 2013 10:35 pm

I don't know where I'd put it or how I'd get it to my house but thought I might share with some of the members much closer to the area. Its huge. I'd love to have something like that.

Measure, measure, measure! I made the mistake of buying an indoor aviary with similar dimensions, then found that it was a real job to get it through the front door. We had to take off the 'feet' and some of the top, and it was 30" deep, so went through my 36" front door just barely. Then it barely cleared the ceiling fan and doorway between living and dining rooms. All-in-all, it was a huge project to get it in the house, took hours for my brother and nephew to get it in and reassembled, then reinforce the back. No complaints from them, they are both such jewels, but they certainly would have been justified in getting after me for purchasing something that would barely fit through the door and then wound up really being too big for the room. And it was so heavy that even though my nephew is a big guy and strong as an ox, it was all he and my brother could do to get it in the house. (We had to bring it home in my horse trailer.)

When I finally got tired of it looking like such a behemoth in my dining room, I had to take it apart piece by piece to get it out of my house. I live in a small house with normal 8' ceilings. It had been in a large sunroom with 10' ceilings, so it looked just great in that space.

To top it all off, the strain of taking it out of one house and into mine, with having to tilt it to move it in place, put stress on all the joints and threw the whole thing out of square. I had to do a lot of work on the doors so they would close properly once again, and one place on the plexiglass cracked in the process.

If you are strong and handy and can borrow something like a horse trailer for transport, these used aviaries can be a great deal. This one is actually not far from me, but if I called my brother and asked him to help me pick it up and move it into my house, I do believe he would disown me!

Oh, wow... it has so much potential! I would also buy it in a heartbeat if I had a way to move it.

I did get to see one person's aviary this weekend that was built on a budget, and it really looked great. All the woodwork came from Habitat for Humanity stores. The front was solid panels of white wire mesh purchased at Home Depot. The bottom fourth of the front was made of two shower doors, laid on their sides. The woman said it cost minimal, so if you are handy, you can make one yourself.

I've talked with the gentleman through texts and he will deliver depending on how far you are from him but states he wants the buyer to see it as it needs "a little bit of work". I'm trying to find out exactly what that entails...
