New flight cages for winter

I finished these this week for winter breeding of gouldians and bichenos. I've built 4 cages here in a spare room...each 4x2x3 high.They can be used individually or access doors allow for them to be linked together.
I'm not short of space so I made these in the middle of the room to be able to walk all round.On trestles too so I don't have to bend to clean out...a boon at my age

I'm hoping for better results in here where the birds can be observed and chicks monitored...impossible in my main birdroom/aviary.

Debbie...Do you cage breed or aviary? I've found in a fifty foot flight that the youngsters have had difficulty in keeping up with the parents to beg for food...hence my reverting to smaller cage flights.
Apart from the fact of course that temperatures are dropping here now risking the health of the chicks.

Mine are in an aviary. When I first started I had them in large cages 2 pair to a cage (4' x 2') but I didn't like the work cleaning all those cages and switched to aviaries.

Those are perfect breeding cages, plenty of space for the parents and fledglings to get exercise. You always come up with such good cage design, Paul.

Hopefully!...Most of the birds in the new cages now. Note that I have designed the cages with sliders...the birds can be guided to the end of the cages and then easily caught by hand through a door especially placed in the end.
Makes for more complex cage building...but a Godsend when there is a need to catch birds up without using a net. Useful too when checking boxes or cleaning the cages.

I think this is perfect for breeding. I always worry about my babies not being found in the aviary and fed when they fledge. That is ONE time that I wish they were all in a cage.

Wow, looks great! The sliders, go through the whole connected flights or is there one per flight? It looks like that's a long way to slide a divider, but it's hard to tell from the pics. What a talent you have for designing and building flights. Great job!

The sliders are for each individual cage...to avoid having them too large to handle there is a fixed wire section at the floor of each cage about a foot high...you should be able to see that here with the food dish hanging on it...the slider goes on top of this and is about 2feet square.Not too big to manipulate.




And Donna....that was what cost me chicks in the last year...healthy aggressive ones kept up with the parents and were successfully fed...others not so big and strong were abandoned on the floor of the aviary and didn't make it....something I'm sure won't happen in these smaller flights.
