Cage with no feeding doors or dropping tray
I am feeling guilty of Harley in the cage he is in. I do have a larger cage, bar spacing is okay for canary, but it has no slide out dropping tray or feeding doors. It does have two larger doors for easy access, so I would have to be careful changing food and water every morning so he could not escape and cleaning it out I would have to actually lift cage off base to do a monthly through scrubbing and hope he doesn't escape. In the meantime, weekly cleanings, the doors are large enough I could remove and replace dropping paper through the door. This cage is not really meant for a bird but could work for a bird with caution. Does none else have a cage with this set up, or advise on pros and cons, I am not thinks of?

Re: Cage with no feeding doors or dropping tray
Harley2013 I have a cage that is quite small with two lift and pivot down doors one over the other.. they are quite large and a pain to try and tend the cage and prevent escapes as they drop down forward. This cage also has a tray but no grate so I usually have to reach in and grab the paper and then pull the tray as it gets shifted. It has two tiny lift up doors on either side of the bottom center door but they are so small I cannot get my hand through them and I have tiny wrists! I have to put bowls in through the larger door. I think it is a pain! And considering its a smaller cage it makes it more likely there will be an escape. If you can work with your cage go for it. It's better to have more space and just be cautious. All my cages lift from the bottom part and I do regular cleanings this way by lifting it off and quickly placing the top part down so they don't get out the bottom. Just have to wipe up a few poops before putting it back together by the time I'm done.

Something that may help, if you decide to use this cage- clip a small towel (or something else large enough cover the door opening) over the door before you open it. It will allow you to maneuver inside the cage, but will provide a visual barrier for Harley, so he might be less tempted to investigate the opening.
Also, if you're planning on doing paper changes from inside the cage, I find that the less noisy the paper, the better. You might also be able to layer several changes worth, so you can more quickly remove just the top one, and avoid having to go in and out more than once for every change out.

Thank you...those are great ideas. I think I will bring the cage hope from my storage shed, clean it good and get a visual of it in the room, first....them decide. If I do, I will definitely post pics.

Re: Cage with no feeding doors or dropping tray
Harley2013 although you mentioned the cage you are using isn't per say a bird cage.. I have to say some of these older cages I have come across are insane! I can't imagine how they kept birds in them! The ones I have seen are usually 10x8x8 or smaller.. and have the tiniest doors ever.. hinged doors.. spring loaded doors.. solid metal roofs.. almost impossible situations for perches.. nowhere to hang dishes.. no grating on the bottom... etc. It seems more like they were a decorative piece and the bird inside was an accessory to the piece.

Re: Cage with no feeding doors or dropping tray
Okay, the cage I have in storage is 29x17x24. I eyed it up to where I would have to place the cage and it is HUGE! I am thinking of just breaking down for a cage of 30x 18x18. I have an antique dresser I can put it on. But, looking for the best for the buck. Any suggestions? I really would love to have one tan in color, but can't find that so I will settle for black I guess. Many places only sell in lots of 3,4 or 6. Any ideas?
Thanks.....
Thanks.....
