Building my first aviary

Post by carlsharp » Mon Jan 13, 2014 12:00 am

Having recently finished my 15 x 24 foot tiki patio i thought it was time to realize a dream I have had for years. The aviary will fit against the back of the house, providing a view of the birds from the large kitchen window. The door the cage is accessed thru the window for convenience and so my house functions as a catch.

Please feel free to comment as this is my first time building an aviary and keeping multiple caged birds

Thanks

Sounds like a fun aviary. I love the idea of having a view from the house.

As I am not too familiar with your outdoor environment I will restrict my comment to the aviary safety design. The window would be fine to use as a feeding station/platform access, provided you can make sure all other windows and doors are closed when you open it. You would most likely find that an easy way to quickly feed fresh food and top up seed / water etc. Be aware that a room sized safety cage is a large one that will be difficult to catch an escaped bird in and additionally if they do fly out and hit another window etc they can do major damage to themselves.

However if you planning the aviary to be big enough for a person to get inside, I would still suggest a double door on the outside for ease of access. Cleaning the aviary may mean cleaning your house too if you need to go through the window each time. If it is a suspended cage etc then a safety of some sort may not be as necessary as a full aviary flight.

Best wishes for a great aviary build.

I found a nice piece of discarded oak at work, and with one cut made both feeding/bathing platforms, one at the main door and one at a side hatch-

Oops sorry did not mean to post the same pic twice.

Here is the side access shelf, I thought it would be handy for food treats, bathing bowl etc. Small, low and easy to get to-
