How many finches do you keep in a cage
I'm curious what people think on this topic. We have two cages like the one pictured here. It is 31" wide, 20" deep and about 40" tall (inside the cage). Not sure if anyone else uses these cages but I'm curious how many birds people would think of keeping in a cage this size, obviously by sex with Gouldians. We have about 7-9 finches in each with a pair of shaftails and a pair of stars being the only non-gouldian birds in each. We also put all the feeders at the bottom so our finches spend a lot of time at both the bottom and the top equally.

I have 7 in a cage that size. I would not put any more than that.
I have mixed Gouldians and Orange Cheeked waxbills with no problems.

Re: How many finches do you keep in a cage
I have two of those cages and I really like them.
At the moment they are overstocked with Javas, there are five in one and seven in the other. I am working on a larger flight for the whole bunch of them and yesterday wouldn't be too soon in my opinion to get them moved.
To be honest, the birds don't seem to mind it as much as I do - it gets too dirty, too quickly. But Javas are big, squabble-y birds so I think they will appreciate having more room.
They may be put to use as same-sex or juvenile Society flights as soon as they are empty, so I'm curious to hear what others have to say about their capacity.

not breeding. As I said, most of ours are gouldians but we have a pair of non gouldians in each. Both are non-breeding pairs, one is Shaftail and the other is Stars. We have found that most of our birds love it with all the birds in there but I was just curious what people thought

Gotcha, I wouldn't put more then 6 in that size as long as they are not breeding. Not sure I would mix species either but it seems to be working well for you.
best of luck
