I want more
Are there " any" finches that will fare well in a small cage? I am staring at Harley's first cage of about 2 weeks. 16.5 x 11.8 x 22 are there any finches with them being smaller than canaries, that would fare well in this cage?

Truthfully, my gut says no...IMHO, that cage would be good as a hospital cage...its too small for such flighty birds...Sorry

I also have a 30 inch flight cage with a canary, could any finches go in with him? Or is he better off alone?

Re: I want more
I have an all male flight. Living together very happily are: Luciano ( canary), Petey and Pauley ( societies) and Max and Micky ( zebras). Now there are another 2 zebra boys, Teddy and Timmy, who grew up with Luciano and yet became aggresive and had to move to another cage.
So as you can see, sometimes relationships work, and sometimes they don't. If I were to recomend though, I would say that probably 2 society boys would be your best bet. BUT have an extra cage ready just in case.
As to your other cage, maybe a little budgie, if he would get play time outside of cage. However, never put him with canary and any finches you might get. BIG no no!

Yes...you can put a pair of finches in with your canary. Is your cage 30x18 breeder or a 30x21x36 flight? I wouldn't recommend zebras...they are beautiful and fun finches, but they are relentless when aggressive. A passive species, like societies would do well with a canary. I am sure there are other more exotic species that would do well too. I love my Stars...I have 2 males and they sing all day. Btw...Canaries do not need company. I was told this by canary breeders. Best of luck choosing your finches

Re: I want more
Thank you. My cage is 30x18 breeder, I took out the divider. I know canarys do not need company, but am interested in more finches, so was just wondering if companionship would work. I will do some research on passive species. I am fond of the owl finches.
Ginene, you must have the bigger flight for those to be together I'm sure. That sounds like a nice combo.

Re: I want more
Harley2013 I have a double wide flight (64"Wx21"Dx36"H) that houses 6 finches, a regular flight (32"Wx20"Dx36"H) that houses 4 societies and a breeding cage (30"Wx18"Dx18"H) that houses my Green Singer pair.
I also just ordered 3 new white flights that are 30"Wx18"Dx36"H. I am going to put my singer pair in one and strap the other 2 together to make a big double wide flight. This way my breeding cage/s can be saved for breeding purposes only

Re: I want more
The gold breasted waxbills are very small finches and would probably do ok in that small of a cage, but I would probably not put any other type of bird in there with them.

I love GB waxbills...would love to get a pair. When are you going to start SHIPPING your Goulds??? I just got a delivery of 3, 30x18x36 cages. I plan on strapping 2 together to make another mixed flight...I think 2 of your GORGEOUS gouldians would be a PERFECT fit

Re: I want more
I've been doing some research, tell me if what I have found is wrong. This cage I have attached above can easily house zebra finches, I have found that zebras, manahawkins, or gouldins adapt easily to a cage of this size. So I have read. However, I am fond of owls or stars but am unsure of their hardiness to attempt a cage such as this with them.
Secondly, I plan on keeping them in the living room, with whatever cage I decide, and so am looking for a quieter species. One that may sing in the morning and again in the evening? Unlike the zebra that I have read constantly sings. That wouldn't work in the living room.
Third, maybe the smallest of species would be more wise? Golden breasted is very small. Maybe the smaller the better considering cage size. I figure finches will not really need toys as a budgie, so less would be more for them in this cage. A couple perches, nest cuttle bone, maybe some hanging beads on the side of the cage to fiddle with and some nesting material. Which brings me to sex. I have also read housing two males together would be disaster, but the males in some are the most beautiful, however, I have read females are not as vocal.
Any input or advise would be appreciated. I am just doing my research and getting input before jumping in. Thank you all!

Hey Harley. Not sure if you mean wax bills, goulds or owls in cage with canary or in his old cage. If you mean his old cage, then I dont think finches would do well in it. If I remember well from old pictures, there isn't any real flight room and those guys need ro fly.

Re: I want more
It is his old cage I am contemplating. I have done some reading on finchs and have come across species that can adapt well to smaller cages. The article said zebras, goulds, manahawkins( societies) adapt well to smaller cage settings. As with canaries they as well do better with flight, but with finches being smaller than canary and the old cage being suffienct for canary, why not for two of the smaller finches? Yes, even someone suggested here that possibly golden breasted wax would be small enough for this cage. The cage picture is at the top of this thread.

Re: I want more
Well, thats not exactly what i was looking for. What i was asking if the literature i had read was in fact true or myth for these specific species. But thank you for your wishes.

Re: I want more
I would not put gouldians in a cage that small. Not sure goulds are much smaller then canaries either.
My goldbreast waxbills would hate that size also, though they may be smaller they LOVE to zip around and are very active little birds.
