WAHOO!
Well, while not ideal the new cage I ordered is double the space of what they have been living in!!
And it arrived TODAY and my son assembled it for me!
It will be a good one until the weather gets better and hubby can build me an aviary.
Transferring them tomorrow..... so excited!

Hubby says he doesn't want to help me transfer them because he doesn't want them mad at him.....
Needless to say, he WILL help. Otherwise we might be chasing 5 little birds all over the house.....

Congratulations. What should we bring for the house warming party? What kind of a cage did you all get?
Oh and by the way, the best way to transfer, is to open doots to both cages when very close to one another. Line up the doors and make sure there are no huge gaps on the sides. It might take them a few minutes, but they will move in on their own. All it usually takes is one brave soul to be first and usually thr rest will follow. But then again, there is always one that stays behind acting as if ypu are hoing to throw him into the soup pot. LoL.
Good luck and enjoy.

Lovezebs, what a great idea. I have a new cage arriving tomorrow so that is what I am going to do. I was dreading the move but your way seems much less stressful. I think it is one of my favorite things to do, set up a new cage. Thanks.

If the cages will butt right up against each other, I tie a string to the top of each door, get the cages in place, then use the strings to open the doors. The finches will fly from one to the other. Sometimes it takes a while. Sometimes you have to "encourage" them to fly forward and out the door. Then, when they are all in the new cage, let the door shut by releasing the string.
If there seems to be a bit of a space between the cage doors, because the cages won't snug up tight against each other, we use a small towel or bandanna or similar thing to fill the space around the doors and make sure no one slips out.

Hey Nerien, I like the string idea. By the way, I meant to say 'doors', not 'doots' lol..
Yea RC, I do find that it is easier to do it that way, rather than chasing poor birds around untill they just about have a heart attack.
Good luck all and let us know how things turn out.

Well, after me trying to catch them....HAHA...
We ended up taking top off new cage, lifting old cage off tray/bottom and quickly putting it on top of new cage.
Then with 1 son and hubby guarding any tiny open spots.... I put my hand in and sort of chasing them down to new cage and other son came and took away old cage while we put the top back on....
WHEW! As it is, Fester still escaped but was quickly caught and not hurt.....
Once they realized how much room they have, all they have done since yesterday afternoon is fly around. Zoom up, zoom down. Zoom sideways. They have not stopped enjoying the space!
I think when hubby builds the aviary....we will make sure THIS cage can be set in it and will take top off and let them fly out that way!

Man, there is a nice huge flight cage on CL.....
It would be all I would ever need. 48 x 36 x 24 and has a cabinet underneath. HOEI brand.....
and decent price at $70.....
Not sure I have room for that yet(very small house filled with kids and pets!) AND I am pretty sure hubby would kill me since I just bought the cage they are in now....
Hmmmm, wonder what I can sell to offset the cost... IF I can make it fit.....
THIS IS SO ADDICTIVE......

I did tell hubby about the flight cage. He was like I don't think we have room unless you get rid of your console stereo.
Ummmm, NO.
But I did tell him I am considering getting it because of the price and then trying to figure out a spot for it.
He rolled eyes but didn't say NO!LOL
