I have completely uncovered Taz and Dingos cage, put a fluorescent daylight bulb above them and what a world of difference. With the cover totally removed, they are much more active, vocal and I have caught them eating more. I changed paper in bottom of their cage, and yes....I placed a little towel over door. Helped greatly from escaping. I am hoping that over time, they get used to my hands being I and out of their cage and I will not have to worry so much. They are catty cornered beside the window. Is this okay to do?

And, planning on leaving them uncovered tonight. Should I get something for them to sleep in just in case they get cool or just let them roost on a perch? Or even partially cover them. I'm sorry I'm a pest. I look at this cage and if I were in it, I would be cold with no blanket. Of course, I'm cold in the summer. Lol!

Looks like a great spot! They should love the light coming in. . Gouldians only use nests if they are nesting so they will sit in the perch to sleep.

I don't have gouldians, but I would think they would be fine sleeping in any temperature that you can endure - unless you open the windows and sleep with electric blankets! Feathers are good insulation - look at the wild birds that somehow endure serious winter weather. Our pampered flocks couldn't take that, but they should be ok with indoor conditions.

When I'm sitting in the living room with a lap quilt, I used to wonder if my societies were chilly. But then they jump in water that's been sitting there and is COLD to the touch. I decided if they could have ecstatic pool parties in polar bear water, I wasn't going to worry about them anymore.

Nice size cage!! Where from?

I actually bought this a couple years ago from a local pets hop for some sugar gliders I made the mistake of purchasing. The brand so the cage is " superpet" it really is made for small animals, I am using it as a large bird cage. Not sure if I like it for a bird cage yet. I had an escape day before yesterday. The two large doors open downward and it doesn't have a slide out tray, so I have to go in and remove/ replace newspaper. But.... It works for time being. I am learning how to make it easier for myself, with out escapes.

Crafty ideas converting the cage. You should have no problems finding a good replacement. I had a few about that size I got off ebay for a great deal. I wouldn't worry with covering them either, they will be OK.

I have that same cage that originally housed my chinchillas and now is home to my shaft-tail finches. It works great.

Try using Kaytee's Crushed Walnut Litter on the bottom of the cage. since there's no grate and the pan is so deep they don't throw it out. You can sift through this like a litter box and just replace all of it every few months.

I only go through the top door during nest checks or to catch them. Bottom door is for feeding and watering. The tend to fly up anyway to get away from me. It's not the perfect cage, but it does work really well for them because one of them is missing a foot and the walnut litter is nicer on him when he gets down and hops around.
