Various answers to that one....but I've used all sorts and never had a problem. The use of fruit tree branches is recommended but I think more for hookbills which will gnaw constantly.I usually use sycamore, birch, or ash because the woods round here have thousands of saplings growing amongst the big trees.

I usually cut from shrubs in my yard. Althea and waxleaf ligustrum usually work for me. I tried crape myrtle one time, but the bark is so slick, I think the birds had trouble gripping. I also find that their nails stay trimmed down, but then I use those little rough concrete perches, too. I think as long as you stay away from anything that is known to be very poisonous, you should be OK.

I've had good experiences with Manzanita and Dragonwood perches.
