Separating Birds

DH and I were given 2 "pairs" of finches, 1 pair of Society, and what was believed to be a pair of Zebras. Thanks to you wonderful people, we've figured out that we actually have 2 male Zebras. We are on disability so benefits are paid once a month. This coming month, we plan to get the materials to make them new cages since all 4 are in an 30 x 18 cage (not nearly big enough!) Will it hurt the two males if we separate them each into their own cage while we are tracking down females for them? I don't want to be forced to take the first available birds, I want to be able to pick ones that will be the right ones.

If I put their new cages next to each other, will that work until I get mates?

If the two Zebra males are getting along, I don't think you need to separate them until you find mates for them. If they start squabbling or plucking, then you might need to separate them, but they'd probably appreciate not being alone.
