Hi all,

Managed to convince the wife to let me start breeding (I get another cage)!

Im thinking long term for something that will be stackable.

The options that you have in GB are ten fold better then what we have here for creating a great breeding set up.

I think you would be very happy with that cage as well as the ability to expand in the future.

You just missed the Stafford show that would have probably had some very good options for you. There is another show in October that is much bigger than the summer show.

I've used very similar cages (look exactly the same, supplied by Abba?) and they were great for breeding. Nice and private. Best of luck!

Those look wonderful, and perfect for breeding cages. They may be pricey, but they will last much longer than some of the cheaper cages. If you decide to expand and add more cages, you will find that the more you keep your cages the same, the easier it is to work out a maintenance program. I have a collection of various cages, and it makes it more difficult to care for them. Standardization is a plus!

No kidding Sally. I wish everything of mine was the same. It would make everything way easier to switch things out and clean in an orderly fashion. And then all the cages would be set up the same too. Perches, cups, and nests in the same places.

When I started out, I bought the cheaper cages, because that is all I thought I could afford at the time. Through the years, I have acquired many cages from craigslist, etc., so I now have a hodge-podge of a collection. If I could do it over again, I would buy the best cages I could find, and every cage would be set up pretty much the same. It makes a tremendous difference in how long it takes to clean the cages.

So picked up the cage from a supplier a few hours away yesterday, assembled and introduced a pair into it, the female was laying eggs on the floor of the cage and trying to nest in the food dishes. These will be first time parents.

Beautiful cages, would be nice to have all cages the same! Are the top sides and back all solid? One question, how will you light them?

I honestly, haven't thought that far ahead about interior lighting, i'd be concerned the birds would try to use it as a perch and harm themselves. I don't think i will look into that unless in the future i get a few more to stack on top. What i might do is make my own fixtures for a large fluorescent tube that is suspended vertically with a metal reflector to angle the light in a 90 degree angle into the cages.

For now i will use a floor lamp on a tripod shining into them and pick up a full spectrum bulb, but following advice from dutch and others on here, i appreciate that a full spectrum bulb will not provide the birds with enough d3, so using a supplement called Ferti-Vit, which is an alternative to Soluvite-D in the EU.

That looks like the all metal cages I used to have...but smaller.Only trouble with them is the joins...ideal for mites if you ever get them...hope you don't.
I've bred Gouldians for many years without fancy lighting...but each to their own.

poohbear....I read your topics and back in 2012 you had some major losses....how did it all work out

Disease and a very bad year for mites wiped out some of my best birds,hard to control in a free flight aviary.I just plodded on treating area by area until I got on top of the problem.
Nothing nicer than large areas with birds in a natural environment, but so much harder to contain and eliminate problems than in cages.
