what perches and plant life should i put in my aviary

Post by stephen379 » Sun May 25, 2008 4:39 pm

i have just completed my 6x4 flight aviary for my finches, it comes off my shed where the birds will be sleeping at night. my question is what types of branches and plants can i put in the aviary for the birds. and also what should i use as flooring i was thinking of just using my concrete flooring should i put down some gravel. i am new to having an aviary so any advice would be much appreciated.

A lot of this is down to personal preference....whether to have individual perches or a cluster of branches. If you want to encourage your birds to roost indoors it would be wise to have the highest perches in there.
Depending on the base and how well drained it is....Large pea gravel is used by many....this can be hosed and raked over every couple of weeks.

I have used bamboo, manzanita, and eucalyptus over the last few years and like them all. Think about how much room your birds have to fly and then land on a branch. If it's too slick or too large a diameter to land on it could cause problems in times of flight when needed - night sounds or other birds. Just my thoughts.
