Double flight owners......

Post by Harley2013 » Sat Aug 23, 2014 10:31 pm

For all of you double flight owners, which do you find better? Lay the newspaper on top the grate, so that it can just be replaced easily and no poop stuck to grate, or, lay news paper under grate? My thing I'm discovering is, I have the newspaper on top grate, thinking it would keep things easy, but when the flinches fly around, the are fanning seeds hulls out onto the floor. I'm having to vacuum every time I pass by. Any advise on this? Was wondering if I put paper under grate, if it would keep the hulls contained a little better because of tray depth. And if I do do this ( under grate) I am nervous about them getting legs caught up in grate and having injury. Any issues with this?

I have the newspaper under the grates, in the trays. I haven't had any issues with injuries from the grates and have been using this cage since September 2013.

I've been using Double flight over 2years... Paper under grate. Still get messy on the floor!! No injuries .. grate get poops on it, so more work for me but I 'll get over it. My RF parrot finches love to pull & ripped paper, so no way to put paper on the gate for me..

I also have paper under the grate. Non of my finches or other birds ever got injured with grate. You can use fabric bird cage skirt to prevent seeds hulls getting out onto the floor.

I use mesh type of seed gard for smaller cage. But I don't think anyone has seed gard for double flight though.... I need one...

I make "boxes" for the bottom of the cage out of very heavy vinyl. Keeps all the mess inside the cage; I put newspaper on top of the vinyl "boxes". Cut the vinyl the length & width of the cage & add 4" on all ends which will go up against the sides to form a "box".

Dolly,
You should post a picture of your configuration. My birds do just fine walking (hopping) on the grate. I use equine pine pellets so all the seed mess falls down underneath. No odor even after a week.

Thanks Brian,
I've been moving things, and tweaking and adjusting for 4 years. I figure I should have it the way I like it by 2017.

In the upper right hand corner of this forum, click on "Search". Type in there "hulls/seeds/cage mess on floor"
This will take you to my post on how to make these vinyl "boxes" :)

Is there something about a "double flight" that would give it different requirements than any other cage? In my cages I put the paper under the grate. I want the hulls to go in the trays.
