I wanted to share something I do with my Goudians, that I think helps them get through the winter. This may be "old news" for some of you but I thought it might be helpful for new Gouldian owners.

I keep my Gouldians in a sunroom, which is usually slightly cooler than room temperature all winter. I keep the temperature in there between 65'F (18'C) and 55'F (13'C), usually around 60'F (15.5'C). I know finches can adjust to cool temps but I don't think Gouldians enjoy (or especially thrive) like that. They are tropical and at least somewhat more delicate than other finches.

So what I do is use a ceramic heat lamp over one corner of the cage, which is on all the time except in the heat of summer. I think the extra heat really helps them stay healthy. I also have electric baseboard heat on the wall behind my cage. So, while my sunroom gets cooler, the immediate area next to my Gouldians is warmer and they have a hot spot (under the heat lamp) where they can always go. While this might not be necessary if your Gouldians are in the house (at "room temperature" all winter), we do tend to keep our homes cooler nowadays to save energy and I'll bet any Gouldians would like the extra heat in winter.

I would swear that this extra heat source has increased the survivorship of my Gouldians. Baby or moulting Gouldians can be especially delicate and I've lost none of my 15 babies this year. Note: a ceramic heat lamp puts out no light and you can find one in any pet shop that has reptile-related items.

I have used these even in my hospital cages, very handy! What are the temps under it?

The sunroom is 61'F (16'C) right now, away from the heat sources. The temp next to the heat lamp (thermometer is on side of cage) is about 70'F (20'C) but it's probably a little warmer directly under it. I guess I could make it more effective if I made some sort of box around it.

Good ideas. My Goulding used to be in the solarium which is very much like your sunroom. Now they are all outside. Temperature dips down to about 50 in their coop area though they can be seen outside in the snow often. I can't imagine raising chick's in those conditions so I've always been glad they only breed when it's warm.

I use that same type heat over my gouldian cage also. I live in an older home and it gets pretty cold at night (I don't like sleeping with a lot of heat on at night either) so I have those over my cages all the time (except in the heat of summer). The birds can choose to perch under them or not. Love 'em!

I also love the ceramic heaters, since they don't put out any light to disrupt the sleep patterns of my birds. They are pricey, but they last a long time, so worth it IMO.

Good idea because the space heater I use sometimes dries out the air in the room! Can you find these lamps online?
