Sorry to bug you, but if you get a chance I would still love to see photos of your green HQ cage. If all goes well, I will be getting mine early in August!

HQ Cages

Post by Sally » Wed Jul 09, 2008 1:10 am

Hi, Lynn - Sorry I have been so bad about getting photos of the HQ cages, I have been swamped lately and wound up under the weather. Anyway, I am posting photos of both the green and white single HQ flights and my green double HQ flight.

I can't seem to get these photos to be realistic, they look a lot darker than the cages really are. I have green, gray, and white HQ cages (also just got a black, or charcoal). My feeling on color is to get what makes you happy. If the cage is in a prominent place in your house, you probably want it to fit in with your decor, so pick what color you like. The reason I have so many different colors is most of them are used, from craigslist. I got a green, 2 gray, and a white (all singles) for $40 each used, so I wasn't going to worry about the colors. I have the double flight and 2 singles crammed into my dining room on a temporary basis (which is stretching out into weeks and weeks!).

This is the white single flight (all photos taken at night).

This is a photo of the white and the green single flights, so you can compare them a little.

Nice to see someone with decent sized indoor flights...good for the birds....Wish I could find similar over here at silly money like that.

Now if you get rid of that furniture and that picture...you could get another one in there...ImageImageImage

You know, I actually have one of those TV trays for dining--I could get rid of all the furniture in there--think of how many cages I could have!! I do really like these cages, though mine are mostly too full right now, with all these babies. First you have to separate the juvies from their parents, then the next thing you know, the juvies are teenagers and have sex on their minds, and you have to separate the boys from the girls!

Just checked with HQ cages...those you have, new are only $127 I guarantee if they were available over here (Which they aren't) They would be more than double that. Good old UK. everything is a rip off.
(Gas is now over $12 a gallon)

Oh boy oh boy oh boy....thank you Sally! You know, I started out with the 30x18x18, having seen that it was the widest inexpensive cage easily available. But in just a couple of weeks I was feeling so bad watching the birds - they are such acrobats and love to fly - and I knew I would have to get a larger cage.
I considered the single HQ, but then knew I would always wish I had got the double HQ. Yes it is big, but the single is only slightly wider than the 30x18x18 (although deeper), and only the best for my pets!
And I do want one more pair of birds, so more space is best.

Your photos are great, and have just made the decision 100% - I will order the double HQ soon. I just hope I don't have any problems with it, because it would be hell to have to deal with returns from Canada.

Sorry you were under the weather. After I posted this I realized that you hadn't been posting for a few days, so I wondered if you were on hols.
Hope you are feeling much better now!
Lynn

I don't know why the green cage looks so dark in the photos, it is not quite as dark as that. I started out with the 30x18x36 cages that are made just like the 30x18x18--thought they were wonderful at the time, but soon tired of them--I hate the fixed grates. I also noticed that the paint was coming off where I put the hang-on baths, and the bars at that door were getting rusty. When I first came on this forum, and someone had just gotten the double flight, I thought I would NEVER spend that much money for a cage! Little did I know that my life was about to be taken over by finches!

If you have room for a double flight, I would definitely recommend that one. The reason I have so many singles is that I just can't pass up a good deal! Plus for my breeding situation, they work to separate juvies, etc. The birds manage to do quite a bit of flying even in the single--mine sometimes fly circles. The double flight can always be divided into two single flights if you had to do it, but you will enjoy watching your birds fly back and forth. And cleaning the double is sooo easy, you just shoo all the birds to one end, put in the divider, and now you can take your time cleaning with the door wide open. Once one end is done, just shoo them back to the clean side, close off the divider, and clean the rest of the cage.

I reverse the positions of the bottom grate and the tray, so the birds can hop around the floor (tray). It is surprising how much time finches spend on the ground. The seed hoppers also work really well with the double, you can hang them on the outside at one of the small doors on the bottom front. The only downside is that you get more seed hulls on the floor than you do if you hang the seed hopper on the inside. You can also use a hang-on bath on the small doors.

Everything you say makes so much sense. I am actually really looking forward to the double just for the ease of cleaning. I hate the grate on the bottom. I haven't taken the finches out, so I wipe down the cage while they fly around swearing at me.
I know they will enjoy more space. The double cage will fit nicely in a corner near my desk, the only problem is my aquarium is there, which means I have to figure out where to put it. (It is smaller than the cage).
So thank you again for posting!
Lynn
