Thanks for the update. I have been waffling about the Quality Cages because of the mesh size - which is even smaller in the pre-made cages, it is 1/2 x 1/2. I think - for all the reasons you mention and a couple others as well - I'm going to pass on those.
As for cages if you had unlimited money - if I were to find myself in such an unfortunate (yeah, right!) position, I would have to give serious consideration to
this guy's cages.
Those are just some REALLY nice cages! And not that expensive, given they are very nearly works of art.
However, given that I am still fortunate enough NOT to be suffering under the burden of wealth (yeah, right!), I think I've decided on
this cage instead - that center divider is removable:
I had waffled about getting the Prevue Flight cage, which, if not exactly the same as the now-discontinued Petco Finch Cage, is at least very extremely similar - but ultimately I think the convenience of having a cage that is sturdier and slightly larger to boot outweighs the initial cost savings.
The Prevue Flite Cage is 30" x18" x18", vs the Hampton, which is 37.5" x 18" x 20.5" (with the divider removed). So the Hampton is a longer and a bit taller as well - but not so tall as to be space that is essentially wasted on birds that are going to spend 90% of their time as high up as they can manage. That's in addition to being a LOT sturdier and safer/easier to stack.
Besides, if I hook two of THESE (the Prevue Hampton F075) together, not only will that be easier to do and a sturdier end product, it'll be almost 25% longer!
PLUS plus, there is a
matching unit on a stand - the Prevue F070 - Which I don't have the space for atm, but who knows, in the future?
Now, imagine two of those hooked together to make one ginormous run, with another 2 stacked on top, to make another ginormous run, and maybe even a 3rd tier above that.
I'm not actually sure you can stack them that high - but if you could ...
Then there is the
double-height flight cage, Prevue F040, which is only $116 on Amazon atm - which is technically too tall, but if you add a bin-like thing under the top half, you could have a finch duplex - and attach two of THOSE together, properly modded to divide them in half top and bottom - again you've got a pretty good run, 2 cages for 4 to 6 birds in each half.
But I digress. Because I am NOT BREEDING THESE BIRDS. I brought home TWO LITTLE FINCHES. They are nice little pets. That's all. I do not need to be building a birdy empire.
Still ... if I did ........
