I am setting up a new flight cage, which has a solid metal top. I was planning on installing several LED light strips to brighten up the cage a little. From what I have read most people that have supplemental lighting tend to use florescent bulbs. Has anyone used LED lights for their cages?

I haven't, only because I have so many cages that it would be pretty expensive for me to convert them all from fluorescent fixtures and bulbs to LED. The biggest disadvantage IMO to the current LEDs is that I don't see any that have the preferred lighting for birds (5000-5500 kelvin and 93+ cri). However, I don't see why the LED strip lights wouldn't work simply as supplemental lighting so you can see your birds better.

I have some ideas for my new flight cage. I will post updates on what I do.

I'm using LED lights in a bank of my cages. I definitely like the fluorescent lights better. The little LED lights concentrate bright light in a specific area while the fluorescent lights broadcast over the entire cage. That, and the reasons Sally mentioned are reasons why I'm not converting the rest of the cages to LED lights.

I mostly have fluorescent lights, but I use LED on one cage. I prefer the LED and will be transitioning over when it becomes more affordable.

The LED lights I have on my one cage are the puck lights for under a kitchen cabinet. It is nice and bright, and it makes the cage look sunny. I bought it at Lowes.

Jordan, resently made LED chips produce pretty intense light and is very directional. I would recommend using opaque plastic to defuse the light and reduce intensity.

For my cage I am planning to run LEDs using a solar panel. The the LEDs will automatically dim and brighten according to the time of day. Then also have very dim blueish white LEDs as moon light to assist the birds see during night frights.
