I just changed from full spectrum featherbrite bulbs to full spectrum fluorescent tubes. there are 2 24", 17 watt, CRI 93, 5500K tubes. they're about 12" above the cage but the light doesn't seem very bright at all. is that typical?

To me, some of these new bulbs don't seem as bright as the old ones. They say they are the same wattage, but I wonder about that. I do place my lights right on top of the cages, so the light is much closer than yours. The CRI 93 and 5500K should be really good.

does the lack of brightness keep the birds from getting the 'full spectrum' they're supposed to get?

Even using the full-spectrum bulbs, I don't depend on them to be supplying the proper amount of UVA/UVB/D3, I supplement with a vitamin and/or calcium supplement that has D3. That way, I know they are getting what they need as far as D3. Some of the articles I've read say the light needs to be at least 12" close, so I think you are OK.

I do supplement with those things anyway. I was a little concerned because if it's too bright it's not good, if it's not bright enough they get depressed. trying to find a happy medium
