Heating Lamp Placement

Hi guys,
I am in the middle of converting a computer cabinet into a cage and I had a question about heating lamps!
Where do you typically mount the heating lamps? I am guessing you do not mount them in the cage lest the birds try to perch on the cover and burn themselves, or are unable to escape the heat.
I figure most people mount it directly on top of the cage, do you place it on the wire itself? Or do you use a guard so that it is slightly above the wire?
Thanks for the help!

I only use heat lamps as a temporary aid for a sick bird, so they aren't mounted permanently. Since so many of my cages are stacked, I use the hooded clamp-on reflectors that you can find at any home improvement store. I can hook these on to the side of the cage, or if it is a cage that isn't stacked, I can set it right on top of the cage. Since I use 60w bulbs for heat lamps, I never have a problem with it being too hot for the wires, and since I only aim the light at one perch at one end of the cage, the birds always have the option of sitting by the heat or moving away.

I also only use them temporarily so I put them on the top wire of the hospital cage/aviary.

ah okay that is good to know, this would only be for the winter, since the room gets cold at night and I want to make sure my birds are okay.
If I can just clamp it onto the cage that would be nice!

ditto what Sally says. I would add, that I had a heat lamp partially melt a plastic feeder that evidently was too close to it. Something to keep in mind.

I loved Paddington so much as a child that I still have the series. Thanks for the fond memories!

Haha thanks, I have to say he is one of my favorite fictional bears! I spent my childhood in the UK (Cambridge and Oxford) so I got to experience much of the best British children's literature!

Although I believe Winnie the Pooh was also English it was inspired by a bear from Canada.

I also watched a movie about this Winnie on TV years back.
