Pet fountain for birds that cleans water

Post by metinemre » Sat Jul 18, 2015 1:40 am

I know these are made for cats and dogs :) but do you think they would be used for birds too?

I have to go out of state for 5 days and i don`t have anyone to look after my birds unless i pay the bird lady at the store $50 a day for one visit to change their food and give fresh water.

So i will put a dozen of spray millet for 6 birds and 4 of them for 2 birds in separate cages and multiple seed cups what if i put one of these pet fountains in each cage?

The other alternative is tubes with footsies but they get dirty fast eventho i change the water and clean them every day, if i don`t; they get pink slimy thing in two days because cages get direct sunlight 5-7pm

Do any of you use something like these? I am 100% sure my birds will poop in them in the 1st day but do you think their carbon filter would still keep the water fres and safe to drink if they poop in it?

If it works for cats and dogs I don't see why it wouldn't work for your birds. Couple thoughts though, if seed hulls get into it will it get clogged? My son had one for his cat and it does make a noise so you may want to be sure they will use it before you go away. I think it's worth trying but would want to experiment with it before I went away.

good luck, let us know how you do

Try it out first and see if birds will use it.

As mentioned by Debbie, It may become clogged, so I would also leave several other water options, and don't add any supplements to the water (as it makes the water go off very quickly).

Plastic, hook on seed cups, can be used for water as well, and if placed high up in the flight, usually don't get as much poop and other rubbish in them.

Regarding water tubes. Wash them out with bleach, to kill any residual bactiria. You could block one corner of the flight, by either covering that corner, or taping some cardboard over a section of flight, and or the window to block the sun from directly hitting them.

As in regards to food. Many seed cups, again placed higher up, so that they don't get pooped into, plus a large Tupperware container with seeds at the bottom of each flight (not under perches). Spray millet is a great idea, but my guys can go through that in no time at all, so other seed sources (in large amounts) would be advisable .

$50.00 a day? What a rip off, just for coming in for a few minutes. Wow!

Goodluck, and have a safe trip.

I agree with the others, you'd need to try it out first. You might have to place a few rocks in the bowl to make it more shallow. Also, if you add something like Sparkle or one of the other water cleansers to the water, that would help.

Green singers in their separate cage don`t like baths besides putting their head in the cup and splash some water but other cage everyone loves to take baths. Whenever we give them fresh water they take a bath. All of them ofc especially lavenders.
so i guess i will use multiple tubes with footsies and lots of food.

I actually have the drink well platinum for my kitties. It has a little "blocker" to keep debris from the water pump. You could put a small piece of mesh on that to make sure seed hulls stay out of the motor. Plus you can also change the water flow of the "waterfall". It's a nifty waterer.

if you have the tube waterers - I forget what they're called, the long tubes that mount on the outside of the cage - and you are getting stuff growing in them, take a small sock (like a kid's or baby sock) and pull it over the tube. That will block the light and stop the growing.

Silos! That's what they're called! I envision a new knitting endeavor - tube socks for water silos, LOL!

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.

Change out you water either everyday or every other day....you can wash your water tubes every other day in bleach and water or use virkon S.
