Always measure the space before buying a new cage...

Post by BillHess » Wed Oct 07, 2015 9:25 pm

Just a funny story from today. I have a small flight cage for my zebras and I'm sure everyone that gets addicted to having finches can understand, I ordered a new large cage.

Well pictures on the internet can make cages seem smaller than when you actually get them and I should've measured the space. I ordered a 63x19x65 double cage with stand. Good God, the thing is huge once I put it together. It takes up almost one whole wall in my bird room. I wanted my finches to have lots of room to fly around and get plenty of exercise but Lord, they will have a great place to live now.

My zebras have fledglings coming out of the nest and they will all enjoy the extra room but I now can really enlarge my flock. The chicks are going to go to a friend that has been wanting finches and I'm getting her set up to take them once they are weaned. Now I can really do a proper mixed breed cage. So excited.

I got home from work a little later than usual and started putting it together and once I just about finished, the timer went off on the light in the room so I stopped as to not scare my birds. I'll add a picture of the cage complete tomorrow so everyone can see the possibilities. I'm going to need some advice as to what species to add. I want to do a few species that work well together and in pairs.

Just had to share because I stood there looking at the darn thing and just laughing to myself when I saw how big it was. Luckily I wanted to get to this point eventually but now I just jumped forward faster than expected.

Onward and upward. Soon I'll have to make the whole second floor just for the birds. :D

I had a similar experience when purchasing my first flight cage. It was way bigger than imagined. Sammy loves it.

Almost finished setting up the new cage. Attached are photos to see the old cage and their new cage. They are going to be so happy with all this room. Just going to wait until the fledglings are all eating and drinking on their own and then move them over.

Wowzers that is one huge flight! You weren't kidding at all. Those are going to be some very happy zebras with all of that room. Heck I could curl up in there with a book.

Madcat Ha! Agreed. I'm all in at this point. Soon the futon will be moving out of that room, my guest room that only I would sleep in now when I have guests overnight. So I guess they better get a hotel from now on  . The futon will go and eventually another flight this size or bigger will go along that wall.

I moved my societies into it because I couldn't wait to see life in the cage. I know I should've waited to move all the birds at once but just had to. When the zebras get added in they should all work it out.

LOL......that is one BIG flight !

Looks like there is a 'bird room' in the making :-D. So much for the guest room, eh? You can always offer your guest a pillow and a blanket, and the..... bathtub (?)

Quick video of the Society finches playing in the plants and loving their new home. Peace and calm for right now until the zany zebras join in.
