large cages available in Canada

Post by Derk » Sun Oct 25, 2015 5:47 am

I am wondering where fellow Canadians are getting their large cages, what they are, and what they think of them. How was the shipping, if required? ie) Amazon, Wayfair etc

Most finch people I know either use the 30x18x18 breeders or make their own.

This is available about an hour from me. It is only 3" off the floor - of course, you can make a stand or put it on something. I was given one but it is not in great shape. I am in the process of trying to clean it up and then decide if I am willing to use it.

http://www.wctropicalbird.com/#!product ... 53844/2584

Otherwise, I am looking at parrot cages that are roughly 30/32" x 18/21" and varying heights, but of course pricier because of the more sturdy construction required to withstand abuse by a parrot, but little more floor space than the 30x18x18 breeder. :(

Thanks for starting this thread, can't offer much in the way of suggestions, I live in Quebec and ended up buying a second hand cage that was a good size. Not easy to find big cages for finches in shops.

I ended up purchasing my larger cage off of kijiji. It cost me $40.00. The reason why I went this route was the fact that the pet stores charge a ridiculous amount of money for their cages. I've seen mine available for $200 plus.

Arama & Brette

Kijiji is your way to go.
I've found cages and flights for very reasonable prices on there.

F030's for as little as $120.00-$200.00 (in stores $380 -$600)
Also found smaller breeding cages, which I partially disassembled and built back together into larger flight cages.

You have to diligently check the listings every morning and every evening, to be right on top of it, and learn to haggle ;-).

Arama@lovezebs@Brette

I have been trolling Kijiji and Craigslist...it has been slow going however and some of the cages have been really beat up and rusty. Some look like they sat outside for several years before the people decided to finally get rid of them.

Amazon.ca occasionally has their cages anywhere from 30-60% off and they are generally marked for free shipping. The sale only lasts for a couple days and there is no warning.

I think I may have just missed a good opportunity to get the F030 for about $200 and shipped for free. :( I must admit I started this thread in part because I had not even heard of this cage until Elana posted about it.

Wayfair often has some good prices and sales as well but I don't think they do free shipping to Canada.

If you give it a little more time, you will eventually find something in decent shape, second hand for so much cheaper. I know it's frustrating through. If you're willing to travel a few miles to buy your cage, this opens up other towns and cities on kijiji to chose from.

I looked into Wayfair as well and it seems to me I came to the same conclusion.

Annual shopping trip to the States? Lol. That'd be a bit of a trek for you, probably. I've had awful luck with Kijiji etc. But keep up your search. Prices are so crazy for decent cages and availability is always in issue for me. I can cross the border easily and have stuff shipped to a company over there as well but with the dollar tanking it's not always a deal anymore. Good luck!

I have three of this cage, and I absolutely love them, but I have been very lucky. Two were found on craigslist for a fraction of the price (I think $70 and $90), and one was given to me for free by member Trisha! Wow, they are a lot more expensive in Canada!

In Quebec we get a lot of these for sale secondhand on kijiji. They are really nice cages from a Quebec company called JOVACO.They would probably ship to other provinces but $$$$$

In Quebec you can also get Ferplast flight cages at local pet stores and second hand on kijiji. Too big for me but they look pretty great

Mary. I bought my prevue f030 a year ago on amazon.ca. I payed $350 with free shipping. Since then the price has near doubled. I love this flight and I've tried twice to buy it on sale and I'm told they will not ship to my area. Its disapointing when you cant get it locally and can't have it shipped. Finding a large cage in good condition for finches on kijiji is like winning the lottery. Lol. If you end up getting a good deal on line I'd love to hear about it.

I have never heard of Jovaco. I had a quick peek at the site. Looks like I am going to have to brush up on my French.

re: the top Ferplast cage - looks like a company that figured out what is needed for finches - more than one level and wide versus tall. I looked on their site and they have quite a few cages that would work for finches. I have not seen those here either.

So Brette, I take it you are in Quebec?

I've tried twice to buy it on sale and I'm told they will not ship to my area
And you are sure you were on the Amazon.ca site and not the Amazon.com site? Did they say why they would not ship to you? The alternative is to get it shipped to the border, but there is still duty and exchange.

I did just purchase an F040 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj9OlUX3CP4 This video shows a close up. It is much sturdier than it looks in pictures. The husband works in Bellingham and he was able to bring it across piece by piece each day. He always declared it, but because it was only a fraction of the cage, he was not charged duty. Lucky me, they passed on the savings. I only paid $75. I was really lucky. This was just a week or two ago. http://www.amazon.ca/Prevue-Pet-Product ... words=f040It's currently on sale for $218 & free shipping. 31" long, 20-1/2 " wide, 53 " with 1/2" wire spacing. I should add that there are no smaller doors in the big front doors and I do not really like that. I ended up covering the door area with a piece of fabric so I could catch the birds. The smaller doors on the side also had a weak/flimsy way of closing, but easily fixable for finches.

There is also a F050. 37" long, 23 " wide and 60" with 1/2" wire spacing http://www.amazon.ca/Prevue-Hendryx-Pet ... words=f050 $315 & free shipping

The F030 37" long, 27" wide, 68" high with 3/8" wire spacing. http://www.amazon.ca/Prevue-Pet-Product ... words=f030 $295 & free shipping It is 4" wider than the F050 and possibly a little taller. The height stated - is it to the top of the walls or the top of the roof peak? It looks like there are small doors within the larger doors on this cage. Am I correct? Do the other doors close firmly? The reviews state the wite spacing is truly 3/8". I like the closer spacing. I have had some adult gold breasted waxbills escape. I am worried about babies also getting lose. I did add plastic mesh around the cages, but of course it would look better without it.

The only other flight cage I have bought used was this one last year. It's an HQ 32" x 21"
http://www.amazon.ca/HQ-Flight-Purpose- ... HQ+32+x+21 I paid $150 even though it was missing the bottom grate and I therefore have to seal up an opening. It was in fantastic shape however. Usually when I come across a cage like this, a lovebird or even larger parrot has been in it and a lot of the powder coating has been worn or chipped off because of their climbing or chewing of the bars. I can order a grate from Westcoast Tropical for about $50. I may do this or try to get something on line.

I am thinking we need to get a group together and order a number of cages together and try and get a better deal.

Wow, they are a lot more expensive in Canada!
When the price of oil/gas go down, the value of our dollar decreases because it is such a large export for us (Alberta, Canada in particular.)
