What a day...

Post by Dramoth » Tue Oct 27, 2015 6:37 am

So... here I am trying to do some work on a requirements document I am doing for a website revamp when my mum and dad come in telling me that they had seen a large box shape on the side of the road where they are doing hard rubbish collections.

So I jump in the ute, wander around to that area and find the "box" which turns out to be an old entertainment cabinet that someone is throwing out... total junk, but it has some good bits of chipboard on it that we can use in other projects so we toss it in the back of the ute. And then we go for a drive around and bam... we spot them.

A split wardrobe, about 1800mm high by roughly 800mm wide and about half a metre deep. 2 halves... perfect for making 3 breeding boxes in each half.

So once I get the chance to measure them up properly, 2x3 stack breeding boxes incoming :)

Now thats a lucky find.

The aviary was mum and dad's before I returned home from the UK and Ireland... and they will be the ones looking after them when I head back there next year to do some more work so that I can buy a house back here in OZ... they had about 8 Zebs when I got back and after we moved from Bridgetown to Bunbury, we got a few more, had a few clutches and a few losses :( we are now sitting at around 40 birds. We need more space :D

It'd be nice to have our own house where we can build a proper aviary without having to make it transportable.

Ya'll sound like you're having a blast with those zebras! 40! That a lot of zipping and meeping! Bet those cages are full of activity! BTW I think the portable aviary you built is just marvelous. Make sure to send pics of this new project.

I shall do, I might do some pics of the wardrobes before the project starts and as I progress along with each stage :D

The best part is that my dad and I am thinking of joining a local organisation called the Mens Shed... for guys who are somewhat older and want to do things that help people out. They have a full woodworking shop in there :D

The new project... turning 2 old wardrobe halves into places for our finches.

The wardrobes... as I said in the original post, my dad and I found these on the side of the road.

The total area I have in each half to make the flight areas out of are 805mm w x 1635mm h x 600mm d

This should give me enough area to make 3 breeding boxes approx 805mm x 545mm x 600mm.

I am thinking of making the dividers removable so that I can turn it into a single flight area covering the full height and width of the unit.

So... to start with, here is the pics of the units.

Derk

I might just have to re-visit my old drafting skills from high school and draw up the plans, scan them and upload them :)

Then it's just a matter of having all the right tools to complete the job :)

BTW: I've just noticed your from Vancouver... I loved it when I visited there in 2001. I did actually entertain thoughts of moving there for a while.

And I have dreams of at least visiting Australia one day! BTW - your native animals are much cooler than ours! except for maybe the snakes...and spiders...and all those nasty bitey venomous things you have down there that are deadly. Yeh, I could see why you might consider moving here.
