Is this small cage big enough for three finches?

Post by Sheather » Wed Oct 28, 2015 8:57 pm

I wouldn't want them to be too cramped... :P

This is actually the new mansion for my society trio. It is three 30 x 18 flights attached vertically (I don't have the space to do horizontally.) They are loving it and use every inch top to bottom. I figure as I have fewer birds now, the extra cages are better put to use than simply taking up space stored away.

Image

A few inches are lost in attaching as some panels overlap, but it's still a good four feet tall.

My boy Apollo and his two ladies Cirrus and Claire have been really insistent on starting a family lately, even when no nests were around they were laying in food bowls and he was rabidly trying to compile leaves and sticks into nests in the corners. Sooo, they laid a collective eight eggs shortly after putting baskets back in, but I removed a random four to keep things manageable. I will probably let them have the remaining to incubate a clutch now, but just a small one. It's been more than a year since I last bred any of my societies, so they should be in good condition.

Definitely! Great idea, 3 of those makes an awesome home. I like the whole room actually with all the plants, lighting and window. Lucky societies!

Sheather Love the idea, and love the room! Finches can benefit from vertical flight too, as it certainly works/strengthens their muscles. Very clever use of standard 30x18x18 cages.

Very nice!! Noticed in the second picture there are spaces in the wire wider than others. Be sure they can't get their head caught in that space. Maybe bend it back in line a little. Beautiful setup!

Looks great !

It works well Dylan, I've done something similar with two and three cages in the same way. Mine however are black, I have to say, I do prefer the white.

Same as you, I figured, why buy more flights, when you can put some of the smaller ones together and put them to good use.

I like the light on top. What sort of light is it? And of course, I love the plants, they look gorgeous.

lovezebs it's just a shop light, the bulbs are ancient but never go out. Originally I had one plant bulb and one cool white tube which made a broad approximation of natural daylight, but they probably have gotten weak in age as bulbs do. This cage gets some afternoon sun (through very old windows that let in plenty of UV) and they get fortified food also though, so while the lighting is probably too old to benefit them like it may have once as far as being full spectrum, that's taken care of in other ways and it still keeps things bright on cloudy days and evenings.

This is the far-end of my bedroom, which is really supposed to be the living room of the second floor of this house, so it's very long. I also have my two aquariums on the opposite side of the windows. The actual bed is where I was sitting when I took these photos, then I have my desk on the other side of that and then the door to the hall. It's a pretty large space.

I usually keep all of my birds in their own room but I was just trying out having a few here, I thought it would look nice. Not sure yet if I will keep it here or move it back to the bird room. I think it looks nicer here, but this isn't quite as sunny a room - only afternoon vs. all day.

All I can say, is that it all really looks great.
The way all your plants are growing, I'd say you have quite a bit of sunlight coming I there :-).

What an amazing set up! How do you get them to sit in your hand? MY birds are very shy.
