Cage/housing question

Post by erine » Tue Nov 17, 2015 8:40 pm

I just got my Prevue 050 today!!! It's not even together yet. It's 37"x23"x60" and it seems mammoth, which is awesome. Here is my question: I'm planning on putting a pair of female Gouldians, and a pair of (likely unsexed) owls together (when I finally make the 2 hour drive to get the owls). Cage calculator says that's fine. Question: could I put one female canary in with them? I know opinion is split on housing the two species together and maybe that's just too many birds in this cage. No breeding, just would love to watch them. The canary seems very passive. I would appreciate your opinions and if it's a totally dumb idea, don't mince words. :D lovezebs, cindy, my dear experts, thoughts? Thanks,
Erin

We always housed our canaries separate but I know a few people with walk-in aviaries and large decorative furniture type aviaries that house a canary or two in with finches and they do fine.

I think it depends on the birds, the canary's disposition and whether the gouldians and owls will tolerate the canary's presence.

Other's may have the same or different opinion on this....

A female should be fine, males don't like to share a cage I've found though.

I have Canaries with finches, no problem whatsoever. You have plenty of room in that flight.

lovezebs Okay, Elana, one more question: how about Gouldians and Waxbills should I decide to forego the owls?

I don't see any problems with Gouldians and Owls.
Both are peaceful and easy going species, and in my opinion should be fine together.

I've housed all sorts of different species together. The only ones that I have run into problems with, were Zebras, who seem to be able to irritate even the most patient of species.

I've had owls and gouldians together for years without a problem.
Years ago I had gloster canaries and gouldians together without issue also but in a much larger area.
good luck, would love to see pictures when all is settled.

I've had gouldians and owls together no problem, also gouldians and waxbills with no trouble. I currently have my owl pair in with all my female gouldians, and they are nesting......

Well, lovezebs, prudence won. :( I decided not to get the owls because, well, you can't have everything. I'm putting my Waxbills with my Gouldians. I still have some work to do, with some natural perches, a few more water stations, trimming the top of the greenery, etc. But I'm too excited about the cage not to post pics now. All in all, I'd totally recommend the cage so far.

cindy lovezebs Another question (of course): if I were to get another one of these cages could I house any of these together: one pair of of cutthroats, one pair Javas or one pair Zebras. So just 4 birds total, but could I put zebs with cutthroats or Javas? Or Javas with cutthroats? No nests. I know there aren't any guarantees but with a cage that big, would it be possible? Thanks!

Honestly Erine, I wouldn't house a pair of Cutthroats, with 'anyone' else. They tend to get extremely aggressive as a pair, as in murderously aggressive.

I have never had Javas, so I can't say how they would be with Zebras. However Zebras, (I find) do best with other Zebras. Just my opinion.

Javas, although generally fairly pacific, allegedly actually do pretty well with cutthroats due to their large size. Assuming the cage is large enough for all concerned.

I would not put zebras in with cutthroats. That would be sort of like locking your obnoxious little brother (eg zebras) in with a local gang member (cutthroats).

Keeping in mind that I have never owned cutthroats myself, that's just what I've been told and/or observed from afar.

Zebras and Javas should be easy-peasy, again as long as there's enough flight space.

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.
