Cage too big for society finches?

Post by zebsoc » Sun Mar 27, 2016 2:47 am

Does anyone own the cage like the picture below?

Is the bar spacing
Or the gap without the center divider
Too big for society finches.
Cages says for parakeets, etc
Doesn't say ok for finches and therefore concerned they can injury or escape.

I ordered a smaller one but
Then when I used the how many will fit calculator it would be small for 4 society finches
And Petco is again offering with a great sale the one below.

Any help appreciated, if your familiar with the cage below.
Petco has no info on size nor bar spacing.
Amazon has a similar looking cage sold by 3rd party seller that says 1/2 bar spacing.

It Must be safe for finches WITHOUT the Divider.
How big is the gap when divider not inserted?

Before I splurge and put this on my credit card really need to be sure ok for finches?

I have one of these. Its great. I've used it for societies and grasskeets when I had those and for Gouldians.
Bar spacing is a half inch. The floor grate comes out for cleaning which is nice.
The gap with divider removed is a bit over a half inch. Just as insurance I made some strips of wood to fill the gap. That is probably overkill. Without that filler I doubt that escape or injury is likely unless you keep REALLY tiny finches.
The front door is generous sized and may be the biggest escape risk if your birds are flighty and you aren't careful.

You should like it. Four societies will luxuriate in that large space.

I have one also. I put all of my Goulding juvs in there with plenty of perches. There are 13 in there with no divider they seem to have plenty of space. No fighting
30+ Gouldians
1 Red Cheeked Cordon Bleu
1 White Society
1 Fawn Owl

Just picked one up off CL for $100 about a month ago. Thought the price was a little steep, but it is a huge cage. Yes! The societies will love it!

BillHess has similar cage with society finches in it. I think he has used a wire mesh to cover the gap between two cages. Look the video in his thread,

I love Gouldian Finches.

I have this cage too, and it's my favorite. I've got red headed parrot finches and a green singer in there. There's lots of room and it's very easy to clean. You can't go wrong with this cage!
2 owls
2 red-faced parrot finches
1 parrot finch hybrid
4 societies
7 gouldians
2 canaries
2 cocker spaniels

I just ordered one of these cages and I can't wait for it to come in. I'm keeping in the divider, and using one side for my blue faced parrot finch pair, and the other for my magpie mannikin pair.

thank you everyone for your very helpful responses. I ordered it today. looking for to its coming.

Thank you for the reassurance that it will work for my society finches.

And thank you for the helpful suggestions on the wood or mesh for the gap if need

Sam007: that's a beautiful video and great view of the cage.

From the responses and the video, looks and sounds like I could add several more finches.
When I used the calculator check for how many birds per cage, it had said 5-6 birds as the maximum.
