Cage terminology

Post by Dave » Thu Nov 17, 2016 5:13 pm

It always bothers me a little bit when a large cage is called an aviary.

To my mind, an aviary is a bird enclosure that is large enough for a person to walk into. A large cage (say, 50" tall x 36" wide) is still a large cage.

Or is there another term that can be used for a large cage? I know that a dictionary uses the terms 'large cage' and 'aviary' as synonyms. Can we improve on the terms?

Dave

I call it a flight, or a flight cage.

I agree, using the term aviary for any cage larger than average is ridiculous.

In my country of origin (Hungary) someone once defined aviary as being at least 1 m3 in size (eg 1x1x1 m).

A larger cage below aviary size (say 120x50x60 cm) would be called a "flight cage", but that term is also used very loosely on this forum often for quite small cages.
