Re: Aviary Restoration
I still have some finishing touches, but for the most part, its all finished. I decided to name it "The Finch Flat" I decided to go acrylic glass in the bottom and kept the real glass on the top door. Ill probably try to get my birds in it this weekend. Its hard to tell from the pics but it has a few doors in each of the wire sections. One door will support a nesting box, the other is a larger door for misc access. Then there are a couple of the standard feeder doors too. The doors are held closed with magnetic latches, however Ill probably rig a couple of additonal safety latches just for good measure.
This was a fun project, now im excited to get it in the house and get the birds in it.
So here it is, The Finch Flat
Thanks for looking.

Re: Aviary Restoration
Nice Job, John!
Your roof design has plenty of room to hide some small halogen spotlights wired to a convenient dimmer switch somewhere.
I have a multi-use cage about the same size as yours in my garage. I use it as an easy-catch display cage for my sale birds and also as a separate flight away from the main outdoor aviary to quarantine new birds. It's also great to use for selective breeding and as a brooder for floor birds like baby button quail. There are 4 nest boxes mounted in the corners near the ceiling and wired with low cost endo cams for computer viewing the eggs and nestlings without disturbing anybody.
Mine is on casters so I can easily move it around for cleaning and to occasionally give the birds some full sunlight outside the garage. It also has a rather unique 4' long home made treat tray that keeps all the tails over the side and not in the food. Seed feeders, treat tray, bird bath and water towers are all serviced from the outside for my own convenience.
I use decomposed granite on the slide-out floor. It's easy to remove once-in-a-while for cleaning with a shop vac.
My birds will devour any green growing plants so I used artificial (silk) plants I bought from Craig's List to give it a fresh, natural look. Looks great with the spot lights and the birds love to play in it. The plants are easy to remove and clean off with a hose.
Again, nice project! I'm sure you'll enjoy this fascinating display.

Re: Aviary Restoration
The Finch Flat is stocked!
I finally have my birds in the Finch Flat!
In the Formal living
A view from the top looking down.
Atticus on a branch
All 7 Birds pose for a shot. Atticus likes the home made swing.
(From Left to right, Coco, Brownie, Pie, Pinky, and Donald
Atticus on the swing and Speckles behind on the branch.)
Atticus and Donald
Societies all huddled in for the night.
The two Zebs huddled into one of the seed bowls but I didnt have enough light to get a good pick of that.

Re: Aviary Restoration
Thank you! It was a very fun project. Now I just sit and watch them, so entertaining! The two Zebs get along fine with 5 Societies, I havent seen any wreck less behavior on the Zebs part. The two stick together pretty well.

Like I've said before, you did a beautiful job.
Wonderful pictures. I absolutely love the one of the Socies sleeping on their shelf/swing ( the colours and lighting are amazing).

It looks fantastic! I also like the ambient blue light and all the societies huddled together under it. The whole look is warm and inviting.

Thank you all for the nice compliments. Those societies love that shelf swing. I love the little fluff balls at night, they remind me of the tribbles from Star Trek. LOL
