Gouldians and Societies together ?

Post by lem2bert » Tue Feb 07, 2017 11:31 am

I have two Gouldians (male and female no nest) in a 63" L x 18" W x 30" H. I would like to get two Societies to put in with the Gouldians but would like to get information from members if this may cause problems. Thank-you in advance for any help you may be able to give me. :)

lem2bert You know how I feel about it Betty,I think you will see problems if gouldians want to breed even if there is no nest.My family of six do ok in with my society but the cage is quiet a bit bigger and babies are still young ,when the pair you have was with my pairs of waxbills lots of chasing that's why I rehomed them to you. someone here might of had better luck and might feel different.I think you would have better luck separating your canaries one with gouldians and one with a pair of society, the canaries are pretty much bigger and the gouldian's would be fine with the male and the society with the female.

I personally would not mix goulds and society.
First, there are a couple diseases society's can carry that will kill gouldians but have no effect to the society.
Secondly, if you do intend to breed the society's will take over the gouldian nest.

Best of luck with whatever you choose

Thank-you both for your response !! :) . Right now everyone is getting along well the way they are, so I have empty cage in storage that could be an option . :) Just need to think about where to put it. :?

debbie276 lem2bert you can keep goulians and society together but not a good idea if breeding (I believe Betty doesn't want to breed her gouldians) correct me Betty if I misunderstood,Quite a few breeders of gouldian's do use society as fosters for eggs so not sure why some would take that chance if society are carries of diseases that can give to new babies ???? That cage would be great for society Betty and you wouldn't be sorry if you did get a pair they are my favorite little finch

Thank -you for your link, I did read it and would not take a chance. Everyone seems to be happy the way things are so I will keep everything the same ( in case I want to breed in the future). :D

lem2bert debbie276 I also have read that article before and it is taking about fostering not keeping adult gouldians with adult society with no breeding involved I think that is what Betty was asking and the compatibility chart says they are fine together because they are both passive.I was not a acausing you of pulling it out of your hat or making it up, it was just not what Betty was asking sorry if you misunderstood me

It is more likely that the society's effect chicks because they are used to foster. The gouldians have no immunities to the diseases so I have no doubt it would also effect adults, IF the society's are carriers.
Not all society's are carriers but I personally wouldn't take the chance.
The charts are showing the most likely personalities of the species not that they necessarily will all get along.
You have to keep in mind that having a pair it will be hard to keep them from wanting to breeding whether you intend to or not.
Ultimately the decision is up to Betty, just thought she was looking for thoughts and opinions.

Thank-you both, you have both helped me to decide that I am not going to put the societies and the Gouldians together. Barbara, your experience with societies and a pair of goudians not getting along very well together. Debbie with your experience breeding Gouldians I will not mix the two together as you say having a pair they will most likely want to breed some day !! Thank-you both again. :D

The "Finch Information Centre", which you can access by clicking on Helpful Finch Link (Finch Information Centre) on the upper left hand of the screen, right under where you log in and log out.

. There is a lot of helpful and interesting information in there, including the Finch compatibility chart. I believe it's somewhere under housing, but feel free to browse all the information in there.
