Where do your finches sleep?
I'm wondering where your finches sleep at night. I am not breeding my finches so i'm not looking for answers of a nest or nest box. I'm looking to rearrange the cage and want to make sure to give them a place they feel safe and comfortable. Any suggestions (Or photos) are great!
Please comment where your finches sleep, other than a nest/box.

I have so many...... if they don't have a nest box, they sleep on perches.

What type of perch? Rope, branch, dowel?

Branches and dowels. I don't use rope, afraid of tiny tonails getting caught in them and injuring the finches.

Four of my societies sleep in their food dish and the other 6 sleep on perches. Natural wood and dowel perches.

Re: Where do your finches sleep?
Mine mostly sleep in the bottom of the cage, a habit they got into before Bambi (my male fawn bengalese) learned to fly properly. He'd been kept in a tiny cage for months and had to work back up to being able to fly properly.
Now they will occassionally sleep on a perch, after more than a year. But initially he didn't feel safe up there - and in fact could only get to the higher perches by sort of half-jumping half-climbing. I had to put one of the dowel perches in there at a slant so he could get up into the higher parts of the cage.
He's fine now, but they still sleep down there more often than not.

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.

- The male gouldian usually sleeps on the top of this branch while the female perches a few inches down. The society finches occasionally sleep on top of the nest box (barely visible here), but have lately been sleeping in it. A platform attached to the corner of the cage may be preferred over a branch by nest-sleepers.

Re: Where do your finches sleep?
My finches also sleep on branches.
My two gouldians sleep on a branch next to each other, one facing the front of the cage the other facing the back. Like two little soldiers on guard duty.
My society sleeps on a high branch behind some flowers !

My cage is decorated for Easter.
Attached to the back wall is a long swag of greenery from Michaels. Two of the finches sleep in there - you can't even see then when they are sleeping, they are almost completely covered.. The third one sleeps on the swing.

Re: Where do your finches sleep?
I made a swing and a shelf out of cage material
You can see the shelf on the left of this pic.
here they are getting ready to roost.
here they are on the swing.
Its enough to give them security but its open enough for them not to lay eggs.

Re: Where do your finches sleep?
First off finchgrinch, LOVE that handmade swing! Great idea, I definitely would like to try something like this out.
@alyse36
My birds actually like to switch it up. They seem to go through phases where they're all like sleeping in one area, the move to another. Or, some will occasionally choose a swing to be away from the others. Unfortunately, this ladder that I made into a "swing" was a HUGE hit with my gouldians, but too much so--they started squabbling over it when it was time to roost. So, no more ladder swing until I can get a larger, or additional one instead. Current roost-of-choice is at the top of a flexible faux-branch I have in the middle-ish of the cage, spiraled kind of like a vine.
My blue goulds are the similar--sometimes the sleep on a perch in the left corner of their cage, other times they sleep on the "secluded" right side where there's lots of camouflage in greenery, plus a nest. The nest is relatively new, so they haven't put too much interest into it.
My other guys with the ladder swing; they had nests when I bred them last year. And you bet they'll take a nest over a perch any day, esp if they want to breed! Once I took the nests out for the season, they were hanging on the outside of an empty cage. Well, the birds were out for free-flight one evening and took it upon themselves to settle in for the night in "their" nest--I literally had to dump/shake them out because they REFUSED to budge! Was very funny.
Tangent aside, no matter what kind of setup you have, your finches are always going to pick a combination of: higher/highest perching areas; secluded/foliaged-areas that give them privacy; a smallish "individual" perching area where they feel safe and have their own space away from the cagemates. I'd say that goes for the majority of finches kept.
