How many zebra finches fit in this cage?

Post by David » Fri Jun 02, 2017 12:23 pm

I'm thinking to get an extra cage for some zebra finches, due to their aggressive and fighting in other cages, what's the maximum # of zebra finches I can put in this cage? I'm thinking if 8-10 based on those people who put up reviews and suggestion, but I wanna make sure since people know better here in this site, always make sure something better than guessing! I heard that height doesn't count but only length and width , the cage size I'm using is 31L x 20.5D x 40H ---- actually size without the stand (Cage size by inches). I'm thinking to buy 2 of these, let 8-10 zebbies in each cage, the breeders stay in other flight cages I'm current using. What ideas and suggestions you guys have? Thanks in advance! :)

The perches should be on each end so the birds can fly from one end to the other. There looks like enough room for them, but then I don't have any zebras.

Yeah I definitely will arrange the perches, this pic just downloaded from website :) I will get it by next week and let the zebras in. I got more males than females, not sure if I should put them in separate cages like males in one and females into other? Or should I put pairs in both cages? hope not cause fighting though :/ it's hard to take them out once put them in, and hard to see which are the aggressive ones. I will observe them anyway. Thanks in advance, anyone got some advices? :D

Also if I'm planning to put something for them to hide in the cage, is fake plants safe for birds? Or should I use real plants and if so what the safe types? I wanna decorate the cages inside so it looks prettier, I hope they gonna like it , the only thing I'm worried the most are when they hissing and fighting in same cage :(

I would definitely add fake plants to the cage, to provide some hiding places for any birds that might be chased or picked on. With the more aggressive species, you never know just how they will get along. Some have no trouble at all, others have nothing but trouble. Keeping the sexes separate can help, but is not a guarantee that you won't have some aggressive behavior.

David

Hopefully they will all learn to get along in time.

With Zebras, the pecking order is very important, as in who's the top Zebra, who is the lowest, and where everyone else fits in somewhere in the middle. This goes both for males and females.

I also use newspapers on the bottoms of the flights. They are cheap, absorbant, and easy to change on a regular basis.

I have tried different things.
Puppy pee pads are good, but get expensive. Hay is great but they throw it everywhere, creating a huge mess. The same goes for hamster wood shavings.

I am not a fan of stuff that you have to use a dust pan and brush to get out of the flights and it plugs up the vacuume cleaner. Some people use sand (haven't tried it yet), but again I think it would go everywhere.

Elena

I know they sometime just fight and pecking others wanna be the bossy I guess! Caused a lot of headache for me, I figured out few aggressive ones and I put them in separate cages and see if remain zebras get along. Then yesterday another 2 wanna be the bossy again in this cage :/ :( I cant make them peace and stop fighting sigh. I don't wanna end up with 3 flight cages or more.... just because the aggressive few zebbies, any other better way to separate them? I put enough perches and evenly locate in the cage , they just too picky to others. :| I still keeping the newspaper and coupon paper in it. Yeah maybe not a good idea to use sand or hay make a big mess indeed.

Without out having to be a mathematician and using cage size charts :-J
You could house 10 - 12 zebras at a push but you'd more than likely gonna get constant bickering between em,

Realistically 6 finches should be ok but still may need to be watched at first,

I'd introduce all 6 birds together because this way none of the birds would have gained a territory before other birds would be introduced

It's not really essential but if need be and to decorate yer cage a little as sally also mentioned you can put some artificial greenery in the cage and will aid some privacy.

Be lucky
