Chicken pen

Post by Christian » Mon Sep 11, 2017 4:31 pm

Question in regards to housing canary hens. I am thinking of getting a chicken pen 50" W x 48" D x 19" H. I have plenty of room. It's not super tall, but has lots of width. The wire mesh has 1/2" wire mesh holes with a wooden cedar frame. Cost $99 new. It is foldable.

I'd often wondered if these could be used as little aviaries.

This model for much cheaper could be a nice starter structure. I've kinda drooled over that.. HEY can you fit that into your birdroom?

The prices on these things are nuts, and a lot of them are only 4 feet tall, eventhough they look tall in the picture.

And some even lower in height than that. I day dream about 3 those aviaries I posted zip tied together with a roof installed, and some walls put up in one of them.

Sigh

The width and depth measurements sound ok but I am not sure about the height. Is this going to be in your house ? Is it going to be placed on the floor ? Just curious as my canary loves to be up high and I am wondering how your canaries would mind be so low to the floor.

lem2bert, I asked a canary breeder about that once. He had banks of breeding cages, from the ceiling to about a foot off the floor. My question was--were the higher cages more productive than the lower ones. He said that he couldn't tell any difference.

I agree with you in principal, though. If there is a lot of traffic in the room with low cages, I'd think the birds closer to the floor would be more stressed.

Yes that was what I was thinking 19 inches off the floor is very low, I would think that would panic them when someone walked nearby.

I scrapped the idea of a chicken pen.
I decided (I think lol) to go with a cage dimensions 48" x 24" x 24"
With the exception of sleeping and resting, they are active along the floor of the cage.
I am going to use part of a branch to occupy the cage. My canaries love to explore amongst the crevices and hop everywhere.
Much like the sparrows in our woods. They tend to hang out in brush and piles of collected dried branches and twigs.
Again this will house canary hens and chicks only.
Question. How many canaries would you suggest should be the limit?
It will be housing at least six hens.
Obviously the more room the better.
My hens are currently housed in a smaller cage, with no problems.
Cage will be approx. 3 feet off the floor. Basically waist high.
