WIRE NESTING SETUP.

Post by mick1933 » Fri Sep 22, 2017 7:28 pm

Hi. I have made a wire nesting setup to hanx on the wall of my aviary, similar to the ones I have seen on the net. The wire is made up of 4 inch squares. My setup is 48 inches long (12 squares), 20 inches high (5 squares) and 8 inches deep (2 squares). What I need to know is do I have to put anything inside the setup to compartmentalise the areas to stop the birds when then start nesting breaking through the walls into another birds nest and also to stop the material I have to put inside from compacting. The next thing is, what do I put inside the set up initially? I have read some people use bracken ferns but I don't have any bracken ferns near where I live. Can I use the leaves from the branches of palm trees that are over a foot long and fairly thick. Would be great if I could as I have a number of palm trees on my property. Regards

I am the world's worst photographer so I hope you can get an idea of the thing I was describing. That is of course if I can work out how to load the photos. Sorry can someone give me an idea as to how I add an attachment? [-X

Hi Mick,

Is each little square going to be a nest?

That's so cool.

I hope they will be nests but I don't know if I have to do anything to help them get started. Regards [-o<

Not sure, as I have never seen a set up like that before, so we'll have to wait and see together (maybe start them off with a bit of nesting material in each square, to give them a hint).

The Canaries, will appreciate little cup nests for breeding as far as I know.

Take care, and have a good weekend.

mick1933 That is similar to what we do in South Africa. We use a bush called "slangbos" You don't have to put anything in it. We normally just use the hand to push nestsize hole in every section. Birds love it.

This is exactly what I do here in England, I place the wire rack up in the top corner of me flight / avairy and stuff it with hay and grasses etc, the holes in mine are about 2 x 2 inches square,

This original idea I have seen being used with some of Australia's best finch breeders and I believe that breeders in Africa have also followed suit aswell :)]

I use this for me waxbills, it's possible to get a few pairs nest in the rack but in all honesty I'm just interested to get at least one pair of me waxbills breed in it, if I get just one pair build and make a nest in the rack and successfully rear a nest of youngsters then to me I've achieved In what I intended to do :-BD
