Hey guys it's me Nick again. Based on shopping around I have decided I might be better off making my own bird cage/aviary. However I don't really know where to start. That's I created this post. So me and everyone else that is thinking of building their own cage or aviary can figure out where to start and what to do. So I hope you guys can help. Please leave detailed instructions and even pictures of what your build looks like. Thanks in advance.

Hi Nick
Building your own aviary can be a really fun and creative project. I've been at it for over 30 years and still find ways to improve on my original designs.

About 10 years ago I decided to sell or trade off all my birds and tear the whole place down to replace the 25 year old back wall and correct all the things that could use an upgrade. Still working full time, it took an entire summer to bring it back to life.

My first questions to you are how big can you go and how's your budget?

Bigger is always better for the birds. Mine is 500 sq ft with about 2/3 of it weather protected. As with any other construction project, I would start with a general design... then work on the foundation (around the perimeter of aviary) as well as the plumbing & electrical. I have loads of information for you. Let me know if you would like to share your design work.
Paul

Hi there,
I wanted a large indoor cage and so I converted a computer desk. It was quite similar to an entertainment center so I closed off the back with chicken wire then made two simple doors. It also had a light fixture which I attached to the roof of it and installed a UV lightbulb.

It was my first small construction project and while not polished it has housed my birds safely for 3 years.
