Bar spacing for firefinches

Hello! I received a pair of red billed firefinches this evening. They were flown in from a breeder, and I had never seen them in person before. They are absolutely tiny! I’m concerned that my cage with 1/2” bar spacing isn’t going to work. Any advice or thoughts on whether or not they need a cage with smaller bar spacing?

hfinney Some of it depends on your cage. I have some in cages that have 1/2" x 2" wire mesh and have had no problems.

My favorite cage for this species is the Prevue Hendryx flight cage, which has 3/8" bar spacing. This cage is large enough to keep up to 3 pairs of finches, especially the smaller ones.

The cheaper white cages made in China with 1/2" bar spacing are OK, except you have to watch the fact that the bars are very pliable, so a bird could conceivably push through the bars. You also have to watch for areas that actually have more than 1/2" spacing, such as in corners or around doors.

You will love this species, they are adorable!

Thank you for your help! I have them in a cage now with 1/2" bar spacing, and so far so good. We'll see!
