Oil-Based Staining

Hello,

I am in the process of building my Gouldian Finch aviary and made the mistake of using oil-based wood staining. I am planning to use water-based polyurethane on top of the wood staining within the next few days.

I do not plan to have the birds in the flight cage for at lease 3 weeks due to the move. Is it still safe having the polyurethane sealant? I am a little concerned about my mistake and al the wood pieces are outside airing to dry until I put everything together.

Thank you!

Tom

I believe it should be fine but get a second opinion just to be safe.

Give the stain more time to completely dry and cure. Maybe a week in the sun.
Water based poly is a good finish, dries very quickly and will take 3 or 4 thin coats for a good finish. You can do that in a day. It does take a week or even more to fully cure after the last coat dries depending on temp and humidity.
