chosing if house together

Post by goldfinchowl » Tue Apr 09, 2019 12:33 am

I currently have 2 double wide cages
1 has 7 society finches which are all doing well together.
They tend to be together on one side of 1/2 the cage but do fly back and forth using the whole cage and at times space themselves out in pairs.

Last year I had 2 canary females with them , but the canarys stopped bathing because they society pestered them too much when they tried to bathe.

The 2 females shared a double wide until late Feb but became too aggressive with each other as they became more interested in nesting.
I had to put a divider and still had to put paper to block them seeing each other so they would not attack.

when I got the canaries I had planned on it just being 1 Aviary type cage with societies and canaries not ending up with two cages.

I like them all very much but I only want 1 cage.

The yellow canary is more cranky but stands up to the society but had stopped bathing.

The variegated canary didn't chirp and was unhappy and intimidated by the society.

Any suggestions how to make it work and still keep them all but only 1 cage? #-o

Try keeping two sets of food and water dishes in opposite sides of the cage so the canaries don't have to compete with the societies. More cover may help break up the space; put plants in so the birds on one side of the plants cannot see the the food and water dishes on the other side, and everyone will have more privacy. Leave the top area unobstructed, though, so they can all fly the full length of the cage. Providing them with a couple of foraging boxes, also on opposite sides of the enclosure, may also give them something to do so they aren't so focused on hating each other.
