Outdoor aviary - amount of sunlight

I have an area in my side yard that gets about 3-4 hours direct sunlight. I’m planning to construct an aviary there.
Will this be enough sunlight for the birds?

I don't know of any research on that. It is a great question. My birds don't get that much direct light, because of trees and the way the building is situated.

One of the conflicts with an outdoor aviary is the issue with wild birds. Wild birds can drop mites onto your birds. In fact, they most likely will drop mites and possibly diseases.

--If you have a wire roof, you'll get lots of direct sunlight but also get exposure to wild birds. Wild birds will sit on the top wire.

--If you have a solid roof, you're birds won't get much exposure to direct light. But they won't have as much exposure to wild birds.

Part of my aviary has an outdoor area with a wire roof. Thus, because my neighborhood has a lot of sparrows, I treat for mites.

I'm curious how other people with outdoor aviaries deal with this question.

I don't have one but know 4 outdoor aviaries in the Phoenix Az area.

All have solid roofs, most made of translucent plastic panels and open wire mesh on one or more sides.
Wild bird diseases coming from droppings through a wire roof is a real consideration.

My guess is that except when the sun is directly overhead there is plenty of direct sunlight coming in from the sides. The birds also have needed shade during the heat of the day.

I would agree with Paul. And definitely avoid wild bird contact as much as possible.

Yes, it is enough sunlight. My aviaries have closed roofs and get morning sun.
