the often forgotten addition to a cage

Service lanes or safety flights are often forgotten when building a cage.Large enough to turn a wheelbarrow. No problems with birds escaping.Sorting out young in the walkway.Viewing of birds in the weather is better.should be at the back as birds tend to want to fly to the light.

That's one big walkway there! Are you saying there are aviaries on one or both sides of that?? Wow

That's two complexes. The one on the right will only ever have cages on one side.Due to where the weather approaches from. The one on the left is going to have them on both sides. As it has protection from the one on the right,Plus it is sheltered all down the front side of the photo.I have another project in the pipeline to finish first though which will take six months.

Alright Gomer, now you've got us (at least me) very curious. Go ahead, make my day and take a guess - how many birds do you have?

Damn Dude!
My jealousy is riding high!!!

Too bad its not nice enough here to house birds outside like that!
Mine are in the house and I have more cages on the way.
(hubs is going to KILL me!)

Around 100 pr plus 60 plus young. Not alot but I don't like to have them crowded. Some would have 500 pr in them but not for me.When you make them yourself you save half the cost. And I don't have a bout so that's my justification to the wife. Each took a year to build,Due to available time and money, the one on the right four years ago before the house was built,(I had my priorities right). The one on the left Two years ago. There would be a few members in the forum with just as large or larger cages.Have a look on that poll, how many birds do you keep.

Brilliant set up Gomer. seeing it has made me more determined to get my extension built faster. if only I didnt have to go to work every day.
the extra wide laneway is a great idea as are the boards at each cage.
do you house each species individually or as a mixed collection?
the feeding stations you have there in the walkway would save a lot of stress on the birds due to you not needing to enter the aviary as often. do you have the water dishes set up so that they are as easy to keep clean & filled
next time I go to adelaide I may have to allow extra time and keep travelling east ( a bird thieving trip  )

The lane way is 1.5m wide,14.4 long as it finishes at the start of the last aviary. There are three lots of boards in the lane ways about 1.5m long,They are good for sexing birds ringing etc.Where the boards are, it is hard to turn the wheelbarrow, lukily I only take it in maybe once a year.
Most aviary's are mixed species. Each one at the end is holding cages for young 6.5Lx2.4Wx2.1H in metres.I still open the door each day to put in meal worms, sprouted seed and clean out husks daily in seed catcher while there. It takes about 15 mins each morning. All water is from mains pressure and gets cleaned about every fortnight as virkon s is added each clean.I will put in some more photos of the things you queried tonight.I am still six hours drive from Adelaide. Not worth the drive to get here unless you are coming to Victoria. You or any other member is more than welcome to visit if in area. Thanks Guys for your comments.I would also like to see other lane ways etc.
