Well I can't believe that my sister (she who thinks birds belong outside), actually went all the way in to Vancouver with me today, to go to a bird store! (it was 2 1/2 hours each way by bus, skytrain & bus.)

When my GBs had babies a few months back, I worried the whole time they were growing, that they would be finished their adult molt before their new owner came to get them, and I would't know them from their parents. (I'm too scared to band these little guys.) So I wanted to build or buy another cage to be able to move any juvenile birds to, if I couldn't send off to new homes yet.

Decided against making a cage, just too much work and too messy. But I found this place by googling, and here's the cage I got (except mine is black). It came flattened, so it was possible to take it home on the bus, thanks to my sister helping me by carrying the stand and tray, and I carried the cage.

West Coast Tropical Bird Store - Cages

It's almost the same size (just a bit smaller) as the cage I have now, so plenty of room to temporarily house my babies when needed. And it was on sale, so was cheaper than the one I built myself. Can't wait to get it put together and get some plants and perches in it. I already have lots of feeders, so all I really need to get is another light. And I'll need to put a drop down door on the front of the tray. (I'll do it with cable ties, like I saw someone do with their HQ cage. Can't recall who that was just now, but it looks like the easiest way to do it on a metal cage.)

And when I stumble upon the right pair of gouldians, or if by some miracle a pair of strawberries... well, I'll have plenty of room for them! Hope she who thinks birds belong outside doesn't see this post.

Franny good for you! That is a nice cage. Although it doesn't compare to the beautiful one you built! I thought that one looked awesome!

I didn't know you were thinking of getting more birds....... are you sure this one is for the babies?

Boy, I wish I had that garage! The two of us live in a very small 1 bedroom apartment. It's already overcrowded. When we first moved in together we had 5 cats, and 2 dogs! But slowly by attrition we are now down to 1 dog and 1 cat... so that's why the birds. Can't stand a place that's not full of animals. Just too darn quiet. :)

Yours is actually the better model (more like the HQ) I think, with the grille that slides out. I didn't get that one for 2 reasons...one is it was too big and heavy to get home on the bus, two it cost more! Well maybe 3 reasons...I don't like the larger door opening. Too easy for a little GB to sneak past my arm when going in or out. And with a cat, I can't risk that. The one I got is a lot lighter (thinner) wire, and has the small sliding doors at the front, plus one side breeder door. They took it out of the box and strapped a handle to it and it was easy to carry on the bus. But it will take some work to modify the way I want it. Anyway, you got a pretty good price for yours I think. They had similar where I got mine, for $199.

Yes this box was too heavy for me to manouver and it has a breeding door on each side. I did find some plexiglass scraps in the basement but it will take quite a bit of work to get it all exactly the way it should be. We'll see...

Please do post pics of your cage when you get it together, Fran.
