Cage Goodies- Where to buy?
Cage Goodies- Where to buy?
I have a new finch cage on order- a HQ Flight Cage. I also ordered the natural wood perch from the same company (ordering direct from manufactur.)
Since I have to outfit the new cage, where are your favorite places online to find natural type perches? Dishes, etc? I have a current cage, but am upgrading to something nicer. I want to outfit the new cage before transfering the birds over so I can't use what I already have in their cage as far as perches go, etc. Dr. Foster's/Smith seems so pricey. My local bird fair vender no longer comes- which is where I got the supplies for the current (2) birds I have.
Thanks for any suggestions!

I don't know where you're located but I would think the closer to you the better shipping rates you would get. Perhaps you can fill in your profile with your location and you'll get better answers than I can give.
For branches - I get them from my backyard. Pretty cheap there!
For dishes (they should come with the cage) but for even more, I just to go my local petshop. You can also try http://www.fairestfinches.com or http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com.
Do post pics when you get your cage set up!

I agree with Liz....if you can use natural branches they are best. I have lots of willow so that is what I use. Remember to sterilize them first.
And I got some of my finch dishes really cheep from Goodwill and the Dollar store. They always have lots of odds and ends. I always try there first before going to the pet shops.

Liz & Blueribbontoes....when I say bird dishes I don't mean the seed cups and such. I meant bird dishes like peanut butter covers...ceramic dishes etc.
Here is a pic of what I use for my Owls. The tan round dish is what I found at Goodwill (I got two of them for $1.00)....they look like small dog dishes. But the finches love to take a bath in them with the dark bottom. They don't seem to like see through or clear bath dishes. The plate with the bird pattern on it (I got 3 of them for 75 cents)...also from Goodwill....they are good for heating up the birdie bread on. And the plastic red and blue covers are from Peanut Butter jars...they work great for misc. seed or other treets....this is what works for my setup. I like cheap and easy...lol.

Yes, I've used clear verathane on mine that I use for food. I don't coat the bath dish though, so they get a good grip. It goes in the dishwasher... I have several, so I can just rotate.B CAMP wrote:I have several of those terracotta bases I wonder if you could put paint or clear polyurethane on them that would make them A lot easier to clean ???

great ideas!
Thanks for the great ideas! I am posting from my blackberry, so let's see if this works before I write too lengthy of reply...
and we have sucess!!
... And success! Getting dishes from Goodwill is a great idea. I will go check the local one- which is half an hour away!! I live in a super tiny community- the next time I get out and about. My dad lives in AK, and his trees got hit hard in the big ice storm they had not too long ago. He is going to be making me some perches. Fabulous for me, what a shame about his trees. Don't worry, I gave him a safe list. Thanks again for the tips.
