My husband and I are "considering" adding on to our indoor aviary. What we would like to do it put a small opening (one that can be shut off) to allow the birds to come and go freely to the outside aviary in pretty weather. Here is my questions? If the weather is windy, too cool etc... will the birds know to come through the opening to the inside part?

I really do not want to put a complete cover on it because I want the sun to come through. There are plenty of trees around where it will be and I will also be putting some inside for shade.

Another concern I have is wasp...etc coming through the opening into the inside part.

Just thinking....... nothing definate yet.

But I would keep in mind which way the prevailing wind blows and cover that part. I would only feed inside that would make it easy to keep them inside.
In the rain or cold I think they would come in if bad enough,but I would have some cover in that part of it also not a lot but just where they can get out of rain or not they like rain

Yes, I had already thought that I would only feed them on the inside that way they would learn they had to come in if they wanted to eat.
I was thinking to put a small cover on the top for them, but not much of one.
Perhaps a nice spring project.

The weather here this weekend has been beautiful. (compared to last weekend) My mind is racing with my honey-do list.

I did the exact same thing when I combined my two aviaries into one. I have a six foot hexagon shape which is boarded at the bottom on all sides. The other aviary was open all the way down. I attached the "open" aviary onto one side of the hexagon, making this an area where my birds can get all the sun, wind and rain they want - they sit outside when the weather is fine and all go back inside to roost at night time. I'm sure your birds will do the same I will post a pic soon to explain properly

Donna, great idea. However, without a cover on it, I'd be leary that wild birds would defecate into the aviary and a lot of wild birds have diseases.
Just a thought.

you probably will need to join Donna, but it will be worth your while.

with regards to what Jordan mentioned about the wild birds, my aviary is half covered on the roof and I do not have any problems although I do have a wild bird hating dog in the yard .
if the wild birds are a concern for you then to combat a potential problem you could consider using either bronze coloured polycarb roof sheets or alsynite. both these products seal the roof but still allow lots of light through
