how is this for an old cage:

I wonder if that was a transport cage? Maybe when you bought a bird, you got one of those cages to take it home in. Probably didn't have those little cardboard bird boxes back in the 30's.

I thought maybe it was used as a "show cage" to display birds for judging in a show way back then kind of like we have now but nowadays the show cages are enclosed on 3 sides. Pretty disgusting looking all covered in rust and he's got 11 bids on it!!

He has bids because its old from the 1930,that was probably one of the first cages, seems like I have seen the cages that the miners took the canary's into the mine's maybe thats what its for [no I don't remember that before my time]

its for sure an old canarie cage , my grandma and mom had one like that , it was only used for a male canarie for its singing and not for breeding , here they regulary offer them on ebay or other websites to bid on , prices starting for a simple one 2,50 and for a real old and in good shape around 100

Do canaries not need room to move/fly like finches or was it just 'old school'?

It is indeed a show cage for canaries!
They have come a long way!
Here is a picture of a few of my show cages and these are now maybe 8 or 10 yrs old.Also there are different types of show cages for different types of canaries.
