Sun Room Aviary

Post by CandoAviary » Mon Mar 23, 2009 11:47 am

This aviary is 6' x 3' floor to ceiling. It houses 1 pair of breeding red throat parrot finches. The 2 cages in the front are holding baby red throats (check out their pic in SPECIES section)

Hubby built this for my Christmas present. He put formica on the back so it is easy to wipe down. Painted the wood with washable paint.Put flagpole holders in so branches are a snap to change out. Hung lighting inside with hood (kind of like a fish aquarium) I call it my birdarium. I have a really cool rock fountain for it but have removed it for the time being because of baby birds fledging. I will post a better pic when they are through and the fountain is back in.
The floor is ceramic but I use carefresh bedding. This keeps the area looking clean. I just shop vac up once a month and refill...... I only have the 2 birds in there so they don't make too much of a mess.

Is the bottom of the aviary solid partway up, so the care fresh bedding stays put? I tried that bedding once in cages, and found it everywhere in the birdroom!

Sally,
We used 2x4's for the frame... the ones on the bottom are laid flat so that makes a 1 1/2" lip all around. The screen doors were replaced with hardware cloth and sweeps were added to the bottom.. We then siliconed the crack along the floor inside and out so no water or seed could get between the wood and the ceramic tile.
I don't have too much bedding come out.... only when I walk in and track it out on my own feet. I have the feeders, watererers, and bath (on the far side) attached to the doors so all I have to do to service them is open the door. Everythin is installed with 'quik loc' type containers so its easy to grab the bowls for feeling or cleaning.
