Why did my finches completely rip the roofs off both of their nests? I though they liked the enclosed nest.

Birds are very individual and though they may be of the same specie, they might prefer different style nests.

More than likely they saw it as more nesting material. I have had mine do the same thing. Once I continued to supply them with more nesting material they never again did this. Most finches like more rather than less. You will probably find the roof in the nest.
